Happy National #ButtermilkBiscuitDay! Let's celebrate this Southern staple that has brought people together for centuries. Buttermilk biscuits, often paired with savory sausage gravy, have their origins in Southern Appalachia, likely dating back to the 1800s. This dish became popular post-Revolutionary War, especially among low-income communities. Pork, being inexpensive and high in fat, made biscuits and gravy an affordable, high-calorie meal for laborers. Today, buttermilk biscuits remain a symbol of comfort and hospitality. You can keep the tradition alive with handmade biscuits! Make sure to use super cold butter, grated for the best texture, and working the dough by hand to ensure perfect flakiness. Recipe: 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 tbsp baking powder 1/2 tsp baking soda 1 tsp salt 6 tbsp cold unsalted butter, grated 3/4 cup buttermilk Preheat oven to 450°F. Whisk flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add buttermilk and stir until just combined. Knead the dough gently, pat into a 1-inch-thick round, and cut out biscuits. Bake for 10-12 minutes until golden brown.
