When I shot my first Canada video flown in Mid-2015 there was absolutely no rules saying you can’t fly in National Parks that I could find online for Canada, The only thing I found were the Transport Canada Rules and CAA rules both did not cite a ban on National Parks. Only at the end of 2015 (after my first Canada video) would you find news articles confirming a national ban on recreational drones in National Parks. Must Read << The province of Alberta where I filmed has a blanket ban on Provincial and National Parks therefore you have to be smart where you can and can’t fly if that’s your prerogative.
There’s 2 main solutions for mitigating slow HVEC h.265 workflows (and h.264) that I want to cover: 1) Transcode all our clips beforehand into either : ProRes 422 HQ, DnXHQ 10-Bit or Go-Pro CineForm. Creating proxy files may speed up the workflow but the original files are still h.265 (as I’m shooting with a Mavic 2 Pro) so the hardware still has to decode and re-encode those files, it’s just covering up the inevitable slow Final Render. For something as small and compressed as the Mavic 2 Pro’s footage we really don’t need anything greater than ProRes 422 HQ, CineForm 10-bit, DNxHQ 10-Bit, the important take away is that it’s 10-bit for 10-bit Here : https://amzn.to/2B4gp0d If I’m converting my drone footage right away to something like ProRes 442 HQ before any editing I’m increasing the quality of my video clips.
Yes the Mavic Air I have is great too and is still my favourite “holiday” style drone… but the sort’ve places I hike, along mountain tops is too windy for something as small as the Air, the ability of the Mavic Pro 2 reduces the risk. The Mavic Pro 2 is supposedly only using a part of the 1″ Sensor on the 4k FOV and HQ modes. The Fact The Mavic Pro 2 has a lot of other sensors and multiple video streams going on that require a-lot of computation. The Phantom 5 will still be a good drone if it ever comes to fruition but its not something I’d pay for especially as it will cost much more that the Mavic Pro 2 when you add up the extras.
I personally see this as a good thing, I hope they have ironed out any potential flaws with the new hardware, last thing we need is another Inspire 2 beta drone gate. I used to know professional photo retouchers that worked with Hasselblad cameras and they always commented on how much resolution and detail they had to play with, however the camera prices were unobtainable for the average consumer, they were crazy money. From my standpoint I think if they keep those creative geniuses that have been at the forefront of Hasselblad development in recent years then it’s a good thing. Either way I’m happy to take a drop in quality over the Inspire 2 if it means I can travel with one backpack, hike a mountain and just not worry about a thing.
