When my young family was looking for a new place to settle in Canada after a decade overseas, we happened upon the small seaside town of Sidney, on Vancouver Island in British Columbia. We wanted a friendly, walkable town with ample local outdoor markets and plenty of cheap or free things to do with kids like the summertime. Some of the things that make Sidney a pleasant place to live also make it a fun place to visit with kids, be it on a a weekend getaway from Vancouver city, a sidetrip from Victoria or a longer stop on a road trip round Vancouver Island. If you’re traveling with older kids and want something a little different, book one of a handful of rooms at the Latch, a woodsy boutique hotel on the water a few miles from town.

Our time at Olympic National Park and Whistler had us in an outdoorsy mood and we thought it would be fun to see the city from the lake, after seeing the lake from so many different sides of the city. Had we gone to the Capitol Hill Farmers Market, south-east of the lake, we could have also visited Elliott Bay Books, and enormous bookstore with big windows, a large selection of popular books and frequent author events. Like a lot of pioneer towns, Seattle has a colorful history and, especially if you get a lively guide, this is a fun and slightly different city tour. If you’re visiting Seattle for the first time and do want to visit popular attractions like MoPop, the Space Needle, the zoo, aquarium, science center or Chihully collection, a CityPass can save you a good amount of money and let you skip the line during peak hours.
