Highlights
A First-Time Visit to The Royal

The highlights for us included the Pizza Pizza Petting Zoo, the President’s Choice Animal Theatre where we watched the Superdogs in action as well as the Burnbrae Farms Food & Lifestyle Stage where we listened to a fascinating presentation on how food was distributed, conserved and prepared during WWII. Pack your patience & wallet as there’s always traffic on the QEW and parking will set you back approximately $15-20 depending on when you visit. $25 for Adults, $19 for Seniors (65+), $16 for Children (4-17) You can save yourself a few dollars by buying a Family Pass for $56 which includes 2 Adults & 2 Children, if you’re a CAA Member (20% Discount) or if you show your Presto Card ($5 off).

Fall-ing for Peterborough & The Kawarthas

We also saw motorcycles and a GO Bus in Peterborough so for all you city dwellers without a car take note that GO Transit has a route from Union Station to Peterborough, via a transfer at the Oshawa GO Station, with Trent University as its final stop. This brand new craft distillery, started by Peterborough’s own Robert Black, produces a variety of spirits from the locally grown red fife wheat. We started off our tour at the Art Gallery of Peterborough and then continued on to Lakefield where we visited 5 artists each with a unique art form. Whether you visit by car, bus or motorcycle, your drive throughout the area and along the river to other small towns to enjoy the beautiful fall colours will have you fall-ing for Peterborough & The Kawarthas!

Camping 101: Camping Lessons For Adults

We fell into the second category and never camped before until we tried the Learn to Camp program offered by Ontario Parks. We always said camping was not for us and said ‘no’ to previous invitations from friends, however we finally said ‘yes’ when Ontario Parks asked us to attend their Learn to Camp program. The Learn to Camp Program includes your choice of 1 or 2 overnight camping experiences at select Ontario Park campgrounds. Our Learn to Camp Program Coordinator provided us with LOTS of info including a very detailed Information Guide with several checklists on what to bring in terms of food, clothing and personal hygiene.

The Early Birds Get The Butter Tarts

The expression “the early bird gets the worm” comes to mind when we think of Ontario’s Best Butter Tart Festival in Midland. We were assigned to judge in the Traditional Contest and our fellow Judges included Jean and Elizabeth aka The Baker Sisters, four-time curling champion Glenn Howard and tart conoisseur Mark Nassis to name a few. We interviewed Diane Rogers from Doo Doo’s Bakery about what it takes to create a ‘champion butter tart’ and where she stands on the whole Raisin/ We also saw butter tart wings on the menu at the local pub as well as a local artisan selling butter tart scented candles!
