The Dookie Rail Trail: Cycling in North East Victoria

The Dookie Rail Trail is a hidden gem half an hour's drive east of Shepparton in north east Victoria. Struck by bad weather on a recent cycling trip to Victoria we found ourselves at the beginning of the Dookie Rail Trail with a promised few hours of clear skies. Dookie, Victoria - 30 kms east of Shepparton4.7 kms (9.4 kms return)SealedEasyAll types of bikesA single picnic table is the only facility on the trail. Pick up a Dookie Rail Trail map and pamphlet at the beginning of the trail, or download one from the Visit Shepparton link and you will be told to look for 'Willy the Wombat' at the third intersection (Hoopers Rd) where 'he has made a den in the under-road drain.'

The Great Southern Rail Trail

Then from just past Buffalo we had an easy climb for 3 kms up to Boys Road followed by another 3 kms of downhill into the town of Fish Creek. Since koalas sleep 20 hours a day, often in branches at the top of very tall gum trees they are notoriously difficult to spot, especially if you are on a bicycle and really should be watching the trail ahead not lost in scanning the tree tops. A Tour of Ned Kelly Country: Following the trail of Australia's most famous bushranger?

The site where Ned was captured is not far to the east of the Glenrowen Inn site between 9 and 13 Siege St. Access the site site through Church St. Ned, Dan, Joe Byrne and Steve Hart eluded police efforts to track them down for two years, notwithstanding an offer of £8,000 reward, a huge sum at the time, for their capture dead or alive. In December 1878 the gang robbed the National Bank at Euroa of over £2,000 and in February 1879 they crossed the Murray River into New South Wales, a separate colony at the time, and held up the Bank of NSW at Jerilderie netting another £2,000. The gang expected Victoria police to dispatch a special 'police train' once news of the murder got out.

The Silo Art Trail of North-East Victoria

Pick up a map of the North-East Victoria Silo Art Trail in Benalla at the Visitor Information Centre or download one from the link here. With more than 100 painted silos, water tanks and towers across more than 7,500 kms, following silo art trails has become the ultimate Australian road trip. My only question is which silo art trail to drag him to next! The silo art trail begins at, 200 kms north east of Melbourne and 16 kms north of Benalla. My advice, if you want to see all the silos in a day - leave Winton Wetlands to last!Tungamah, 15 kms north of St James was another casualty of our lost wanderings around Winton Wetlands .
