In my early 20s I took a leap of faith and became a freelance writer. I started out crafting fashion and culture stories for LA magazines and websites. Soon enough I was writing and producing celebrity cover stories, feature interviews, lifestyle stories and fashion editorials for international editions of ELLE, Harper’s Bazaar and Marie Claire.

But my world view really transformed when I began working with Condé Nast Traveler China in 2012 for their launch. Travel journalism brought my real love for exploring how humans interact with the world to the forefront of my consciousness. I became hooked on seeing the big picture and the most intimate little details of the planet—of life—and sharing my perspective on it all.

I’m also a huge wildlife and coastal conservation enthusiast, which inspired me to shift my focus as a writer to environmental stewardship and social advocacy. I worked with Thrive Market as the lifestyle editor creating content to educate readers about conscious living. Nowadays much of my writing reflects my commitment to these issues. I maintain my sensibilities from my background as a fashion editor but now champion eco-friendly, plant-based fashion, beauty and lifestyle.

I geek out on animals, veganism and travel at my blog everythingisnature.org.

In my free time I like to volunteer with Audubon Center at Debs Park, Heal the Bay and Wildlife Waystation. I’m also a singer, drummer, bass player, skater and occasional surfer.

Redwoods Through the Eyes of a Southern Pomo and Coast Miwok Native

The story goes that once upon a time, all plants and animals were people. Greg Sarris, the longtime chairman of the Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria (Southern Pomo and Coast Miwok), recounts this tale in The Ancient Ones – part of a collection of essays in a new book, The Once and Future Forest: California’s Iconic Redwoods, published to commemorate the centennial year of Save the Redwoods League and available for purchase. Evoking the folklore of his ancestors, he traces the stark parallels between the enslavement and genocide of indigenous peoples of central and northern California and commercial logging of the redwood forests with which they coexisted for millennia. Read my full review of this beautiful essay at the Giant Thoughts blog by Save the Redwoods League.

Guerilla Party

A Case Western Reserve University student named Sean Carnage frequented this unusual music night, known as Euclid Tavern Monday Nights. As Sean cultivated Il Corral’s scene and bonded with its patrons, there was no better time for him to document what was going on in L. A. underground music. The low-key Echo Park art space proved to be the perfect venue for Carnage’s Monday Nights, with its progressive owners, the quality of sound, and its intimate size. [Sean Carnage] is a believer in the youth and the way they can change the face of music,” says friend Margot of I. E. August 4, 2008 marks the third anniversary of Sean Carnage Monday Nights.

The Smell: Los Angeles Underground

Bands like The Mae Shi and HEALTH formed with the sole intention of playing the venue, with very little expectations outside of gaining an active involvement in its culture. By 2003, the band Wives was already a fixture in the scene and the venue’s punk following was strong; but it seemed to be the arrival of Mika Miko that set the momentum in motion. Not only groundbreaking, creative bands, but also [bands] willing to work hard and fine-tune these crazy ideas into works that the world can love,” explains Brian Miller of Foot Village. What’s unique about The Smell scene is the fact that it’s punk, but because of its proximity to the Hollywood scene, those involved are not so impervious to popular culture.
