Although some designers are world famous, most of them work behind the catwalks throughout their career. The designer must also be active in the marketing, sales and technology departments. They work closely with the model builder who makes the prototypes and with the model mechanic. He or she may be involved in supervising operations throughout the manufacturing process to evaluate the estimated cost of the product. The fashion designer is not just an artist. The least amount of work time is devoted to pure creation, because the rest is mainly technical and marketing work. The designer, although often a solitary creator, must also possess the spirit of collective work and a strong personality to impose his style. He knows the limitations of production techniques and the brand image of the company that employs him. To carry out his mission as a clothing designer, the fashion stylist must be able to identify future trends.
