Overhead lights are a must if you don’t want to stumble around in the dark but if you don’t want to feel like you’re in the hospital operating room then consider installing dimmers or look for warm white lightbulbs. A lot of people fall into the trap of choosing the paint colour first (which makes sense if you’re renovating and your room is empty) but it’s kind of like planning an outfit around a pair of shoes. Here’s what I would buy for our dream living room. If you’re local and don’t want to miss a paint sale make sure to join our mailing list by following this link!
During the Summer I probably don’t cook as often as I should (or would like to) but I can’t bear turning on the oven when it’s 90 degrees in the kitchen. Just remember that darker colours will make rooms feel smaller so they’re great for making large open rooms feel more intimate. To add warmth look for greens with more yellow than blue undertones like Benjamin Moore Tate Olive HC-112, Saybrooke Sage HC-114 or Louisburg Green HC-113. Red can be a hard colour to use at home – especially on a large scale. On walls try Benjamin Moore Whitall Brown HC-69, Benjamin Moore Grandfatherclock Brown 2096-30 or Cup O Java 1246.
If you don’t have a lot of space instead of a night stand use the space next to your bed for a desk. They come in a variety of bright bold colours and their small footprint makes them perfect if you don’t have a lot of room. If you’re updating your dining room, rescue one of the chairs, give it a fresh look with a coat of paint (Chalk Paint® By Annie Sloan would be perfect for this DIY project) and give it new life as a night stand. I’m short so ladders are super handy around our house but use can use them for more than just getting things off the top shelf.
There area in front of the bed is often an underused piece of bedroom real estate but with a couple of creative design choices, it can really become a stunning focal point – and a buffer between you and those dreaded footboard corners. It’s especially handy for making the most of a small space since it’s the perfect place for a small desk or dressing table. This simple wooden shelf is not only a great weekend DIY project but also a stunning way to display you favorite reads. It’s a great place to get dressed in the morning, sneak in a little extra work or enjoy the occasional quiet breakfast (or ice cream).
