Highlights
Life This Week & Style Scouting

Since it wasn’t even lunchtime yet, I decided to stay in Lexington to do my weekly supermarket shopping at a new to me grocery store called, Lowes Foods. Right now I have herbs in ice cube trays with foil over the top and placed in freezer bags, these trays will be so much better for my fresh herb saving needs. On the topic of shopping, I read yesterday that researchers are looking at how the holiday shopping season may be impacted from the pandemic. One thing that was noted was that with online shopping and shipping being so slow since all this began, they predicted that items, come the fall, will sell out fast or not become available at all.

Staining the Deck

It took some time, but earlier this summer I did finish staining all the wood around the exterior of my house, which included – the lake gazebo, dock and then the two decks on the house. The color I ended up using on the deck, dock and gazebo was a 50/50 mix of ready-mixed Chocolate with a custom color – Chestnut. I like semi-transparent because it has some color to hide imperfections in the wood, but you can still see the wood grain. You can use a roller to stain a deck, but I have found that when you use a brush you can push the stain down into the wood more while following the pattern in the grain.

Style Scouting: Vol. 14

So instead, I decided to take a vaca at home in the form of taking things slow this week to enjoy reading and catching up on some “just relaxing”. Ed and I want to rip up our current kitchen garden to create a better designed one where we can plant more veggies, tomatoes, potatoes and herbs. She wanted it, she had no budget to buy it, so she got to work and DIY’ed it to get a high end catalog look. Looks great left natural, but I would have to color coordinate to the decor of my house with paint. :-)

High End Dipped Vase vs. Free Knockoff

No need to buy high end decorating catalog dipped vases when you can easily do this budget decorating project by transforming large glass jars to make them look “dipped” in paint. I have dipped baskets in paint before and have used pickle jars to make outdoor lanterns and large flower vases for greenery as well as for colorful blooms, but this trash to treasure transformation using paint I had on had and glass pickle jars that were headed to the trash is my favorite. If you don’t have a lot of paint to actually dip your glass jar, you can fake the dipped look using either spray paint or brush-on paint. If the glass is clean and dry, any paint, either brush-on or spray paint that is a paint and primer in one will stick to glass.
