Most of us have probably heard the phrase “Amazon Rainforest is considered the ‘Lungs of the Earth’ 🌎 I can tell you about how if it were destroyed, much of the carbon it stores, which is equivalent to almost 12 years of global emissions, would be released into the atmosphere. What I’ve realized is being there, harvesting the bright orange Tukuma fruit, hearing the water flowing in the river, breathing in fresh air from the millions of ancient trees, connecting to community members, hits very differently. This is home to over 1 million Indigenous people, protectors of one of the most biodiverse places on earth. I’ve noticed for a lot of people, myself included, it takes an experience, witnessing this in real life to understand the importance of taking climate action. So keep your eyes, ears, and hearts open to the world so when it’s calling you, you can take action. 24 hours to go!!! New York State legislative session ends this Friday and we’re calling on @cheastie, @andreastewartcousins, and @govkathyhochul to pass the Fashion Act (A4333 /S4746) now. A coalition of supporters rallied the day after the Met Gala on our capitol steps to showcase a different side of the fashion industry, some not so fun facts below: -turbo fast fashion brands SHEIN & Temu are introducing up to 9,000 new styles EVERYDAY. This is impacting the mental health of the youth, using NY taxpayers dollars for upkeep in sanitary & waste infrastructure from clothing waste -clothing waste is second to food waste in New York and the fastest growing waste category in the country— if you’re in nyc, you know we already have a waste crisis where there’s not enough landfills to keep up with this influx -independent and smaller NY fashion companies cannot compete as fast fashion eats up a bigger market share, making it harder for any fashion brand to grow (you know this is already happening when you see your fav sustainable brands shutting down business 😔) -SHEIN does not sell in China!!! Their HQ is based in Singapore and they are specifically targeting the global north and our overconsumption behavior patterns… policy is the only way to equalize the fashion industry’s playing field. This policy is the bare minimum!! If brands do not meet these bare minimum requirements of proper chemical use treatment and carbon emissions that exist within planetary boundaries then they should not be in business in the first place!
