I find inspiration in the heartbeat of a city, then through a mixture of story-telling and colourful images, I use this blog to hopefully inspire others.
Aside from Italian, Asian food is my favourite cuisine, hands down, but as I have previously mentioned , it is hard to find authentic tasting Asian food in the UK, a lot of places seem to add a western taste that does not always work quite right. When we arrived, there was already a bowl of varied ingredients placed on our table – lemongrass, chilli, lime, peanuts and coconut milk, it was explained to us that these are the staple for every Thai dish, creating the well known, salty, sweet, sour and spicy flavours behind our favourite meals that capture all of our taste buds. Between each course, our waiter spoke to use about what flavours we picked up from each dish, which really helped me to actually think about what I was eating and the work that goes into these dishes, we were also told various trivia about traditional Thai dining such as many believe that eating alone will bring bad luck. The East Street supper clubs are £22 a person, this also includes a cocktail or beer, I think this is brilliant value for central London , as each dish is a good size and I came away satisfied.
As I mentioned the majority of Wahaca’s menu is made up of various smaller dishes allowing plenty of variety for meal options, new dishes are always popping up and specials are added for different occasions. We pondered the menu over cold Coronas while snacking on tortilla chips with chunky ripe guacamole (£4.45) , it was during this time that I noticed, quite loudly and delightfully that they had brought back the pea and mint empanadas (£4.25) to the menu – I strayed way from my usual sweet potato and feta tortillas and instead opted for the new toasted cornbread with chipotle honey butter and whipped goats cheese (£3.50), the honey butter sauce was delicious and the perfect accompaniment to the goats cheese, however I did find the cornbread slightly too heavy and the sweetness of it reminded more of a dessert. My boyfriend opted for devon crab and shrimp taquitos (£4.95), considering he is not the biggest fan of fish based food he really enjoyed the full flavour which was offset by the tangy habanero slaw & fresh tomato salsa drizzled over the top, following this he went for grilled steak tacos (£4.50) that he did however feel lacked a slight amount of flavour but there is an option to add crisp grilled cheese as a topping, which I think would enhance and create different flavour.
