Hi, I'm Janine!
In 2010 I applied to a study abroad program in Mexico on a whim. After spending 8 months living and traveling in Mexico I knew this was where I belonged. In 2017 I moved back for good. On my blog, Janine in the World, I’m sharing all the Mexico travel tips I learned the hard– errr, embarrassing way, so fellow solo travelers can visit Mexico confidently and safely.
I've been running my blog and Insta account since 2017, but I've never really shared much about what prompted me to start it in the first place... Today feels like as good a day as any! In 2010, I was preparing to head to Mexico for a study abroad program and a good friend of mine, Eric, set up a Tumblr account for me so I could post updates about my experiences while I was away. He called the account Janine in the World ("because you're Janine and you're in the world..."). I updated it a handful of times and let the account go dormant as soon as I got home. A few years later, Eric tragically passed away. We were 26. Losing him was (and continues to be) a harsh reminder that life is short and there are no guarantees. I didn't quite realize it at the time, but it motivated stop putting off the things that I want... One of which was a location independent job that would enable me to live in Mexico again. In 2017, I resolved to build a career as a freelance writer, and I started this blog/brand to use as a portfolio. I couldn't think of what else to call it, so I went with Janine in the World. After all, I was still Janine, and I was still in the world! Over the years, sharing my experiences in Mexico has brought me all kinds of opportunities, adventures (literally and metaphorically), and friendships. Whether you've been here from the start or are new around here, thanks for being part of my journey! 💕 None of us know how long we'll have on this earth, so we ought to make the most of it. Squeeze the people you love. Chase your dreams. Do things that make you happy. Challenge yourself. And go to Mexico! If you're on the hunt for a budget hotel in Puerto Vallarta, Hotel Posada de Roger is a solid option. It's located right in the heart of the romantic zone, 2 blocks from the beach, and offers several wonderful outdoor spaces for reading and relaxing when you need a break from the beach. You might even be able to spot some rare birds from the rooftop terrace! There's also a full kitchen available for guests to use! But, if you don't feel like cooking, no worries because there are dozens of awesome restaurants within a 1-block radius of the hotel. @hotelposadaderoger #puertovallartamexico #visitmexico #mexicotravel #mexicomagico #exploremexico #thisismexico #traveldreamseekers #passportcollective #seemexico #puertovallarta #puertovallartajalisco #mexicotrip #mexicoandando #mexicolove #travelmexico #mexicolindo #girlslovetravel #travelbug #instapassport #exploretheworld #stayandwander #neverstopexploring #passionpassport #hospitalitydesign #mexicovacation #mexico #pasionxmexico
Playa Las Animas is a beautiful beach located south of Puerto Vallarta along the Bay of Banderas, and you can reach it by boat or hiking! If you’re looking for an active adventure, check out the hike from Boca de Tomatlan to Las Animas! It’s a moderately easy, free hike that takes you along the coast and through some beautiful jungle sections and stunning sandy beaches while allowing you to soak up incredible views and spot all kinds of birds! The hike takes about 2 hours (plus breaks for swimming!) and starts in the town of Boca de Tomatlán, an hour south of Puerto Vallarta. To get there, catch the bus in front of the Oxxo on Calle Constitución and Calle Basilio Badillo (in the Romantic Zone), or take an Uber or taxi! I wrote a full guide to this hike breaking down how to get there, what to bring, and what to expect along the way. Visit the link in my bio to check it out! #bocadetomatlan #puertovallarta #mexicotravel
Are you looking for Sayulita vibes without the crowds? Try San Pancho (known formally as San Francisco)! This beautiful little town is located about 10 minutes from Sayulita (and an hour from Puerto Vallarta), and while it shares a very similar scenery and ambiance, it's not as crowded. Have you been to San Pancho? #mexico #nayaritmexico #sanpanchonayarit
Puerto Vallarta is one of Mexico’s top beach destinations, and it’s easy to see why. It’s a lively city on Mexico’s Pacific coast, with charming cobblestone streets, beautiful architecture, and incredible scenery. From Vallarta, you can enjoy snorkeling excursions, hike through lush jungles along the coast, lounge at chic beach clubs, and dance the night away in countless nightclubs. Oh, and the food is awesome, too! Is Puerto Vallarta on your Mexico bucket list? #puertovallartamexico #visitmexico #mexicotravel #mexicomagico #exploremexico #thisismexico #traveldreamseekers #passportcollective #seemexico #puertovallarta #puertovallartajalisco #mexicotrip #mexicoandando #mexicolove #travelmexico #mexicolindo #girlslovetravel
📍CHOLULA, PUEBLA Located 20 minutes from downtown Puebla, Cholula is a scenic pueblo mágico known as the home of the world’s largest pyramid (by volume). The pyramid’s Nahuatl name, Tlachihualtepetl, means “man-made mountain.” Fitting, right? It looks like a mountain, too, given that it’s mostly underground. It is unclear how the structure became buried in soil, but the fact that the Spanish constructed a church on top of it only serves to conceal its true identity. The pyramid is still an active archaeological site, and you can tour the labyrinth of underground passages (slide 5) that have been excavated within the structure. Afterward, head up the hill to the Our Lady of Remedies church to admire the architecture and the panoramic views of the area. #cholulapuebla #pueblomagico #pueblamexico #mexiclindo #mexicotravel #exploremexico #visitmexico #wearetravelgirls #sheisnotlost #lovemexico #travelinladies #citizenfemme #mexicoinmypocket #fallinlovewithmexico #condenasttraveler #travelmexico #solotraveldiaries #pasionxmexico #mexico🇲🇽 #mexicomagico #foundinmexico #conociendomexico #ladiesgoneglobal #globelletravels #girlslovetravel #traveldiary #digitalnomads #ilovemexico #traveladdicts #mexicoturismo
DRIVING IN MEXICO While the traffic laws in Mexico are technically pretty similar to Canada or the US, the driving culture is very different. Namely, laws are more like suggestions in Mexico. Also, topes. Here are some of my top tips, but I’m sure you will all have more to add: 🚗 Watch for topes: These giant speed bumps are found in the most unexpected places and if you’re not prepared they can be very jarring. 🚗 Stick to the toll roads: Not only are they in better repair, toll roads (or cuotas) are also patrolled more frequently, so if you run into trouble you have a better chance of getting help. 🚗 Don’t drive at night: Between hidden topes, animals in the road, and potential road blocks, it’s not super safe. Plan to drive only during daylight hours. 🚗 Military check points are a thing: It’s not uncommon to be stopped by military when you’re on the road in Mexico. Usually they’ll just ask you a few questions about where you’re coming from and where you’re going, but sometimes they’ll want to search your car. It will be a big ordeal. All of them will be holding machine guns. As long as you don’t have drugs or weapons on board they’ll let you be on your way. Are you starting to see why I’m such a big advocate for bus travel in Mexico? Okay, now it’s your turn! Many of the tipping practices in Mexico are pretty similar to what you're used to in Canada or the US, but there are some you might not expect. The main things to know are: ⭐️ tip 10-20% in restaurants ⭐️ it's not customary to tip taxi drivers unless they help with your bags ⭐️ tip grocery store baggers; they do not earn a salary ⭐️ tip gas station attendants as they also may not earn a salary #ajijicjalisco #chapala #chapalajalisco #guadalajarajalisco #mexicotravel #exploremexico #visitmexico #wearetravelgirls #sheisnotlost #lovemexico #travelinladies #citizenfemme #mexicoinmypocket #fallinlovewithmexico #condenasttraveler #travelmexico #solotraveldiaries #pasionxmexico #mexico🇲🇽 #mexicomagico #foundinmexico #conociendomexico #ladiesgoneglobal #globelletravels #girlslovetravel #traveldiary #digitalnomads #ilovemexico #traveladdicts

’s Baja peninsula may seem like it’s worlds away from mainland Mexico, but this area features some of Mexico’s most impressive landscapes, alluring beaches, and offers a plethora of incredible experiences for every type of traveler. Try out glamping in Valle de Guadalupe Glamping is one of the newest and best things to do in Valle de Guadalupe, Mexico. It’s basically glam-meets-camping, and it’s popular throughout Baja California state, but you can also go glamping in Tulum, Mexico. Adventurous travelers visiting Baja California must be sure to include a popular day trip from La Paz: the uninhabited Isla Espiritu Santo, located within a protected UNESCO biosphere in the Gulf of California.
