Restaurant Review #246: Bay Avenue Cafe (Highlands, NJ)

I met Justin for lunch after he got out of work, and wanting to try something new, we figured we would head over to “that little cafe we always pass in Highlands It was served on a large torpedo roll, pressed, and then packed with a thin layer of roast pork and what seemed like a pound of ham (the pic doesn’t do it justice). It may not have been the warmest weather outside, but this meal made it feel like summer, given the ingredients and location. Bay Avenue Bakery and Cafe is located at 111 Bay Avenue in Highlands, NJ.

Mashed plantains with ham, garlic, olive oil, and seasonings. However, that pushes the calories per serving to about 900 (and who eats just one serving? ) Chicken with a tomato base, carrots, potatoes, green olives, cilantro, and myriad spices. The “sauce” aspect dried up more than I wanted during cooking, but man, it popped with flavor.

Restaurant Review #245: Bird-in-Hand Bakery and Cafe (Bird-in-Hand, PA)

We usually go there every morning, but we felt deviating away from a heavy buffet to something lighter would be a benefit to our waistlines. Justin and I decided we would share a pastry ($1.79) along with a breakfast sandwich ($4.29). As someone born in New York and raised in New Jersey, I (and many others) have found it difficult to get a quality bagel outside of that area. It is hard to rate a place based on our limited sampling, but I feel 3.5 out of 5 stars is fair, and a pretty good score for a breakfast place.

Highlights from Kunya Siam’s 2019 Thai New Year

As promised, here are some pictures from yesterday’s Thai New Year (Songkran) celebration at Kunya Siam. I did not get as many pics as last year because I was in our downstairs kitchen and prep room most of the time, but here they are below. This required a Herculean effort from her kitchen staff and servers to pull this off. This is such a well-loved event that sometimes it sells out before it can even be advertised publicly.
