Here we have a new blend from Sassenach Spirits, which was founded by Sam Heughan (Jamie from the Outlander tv series) This blend is distributed by the Loch Lomond Group and available to buy on-line from Loch Lomond or Master of Malt. Winner of gold at International Spirits Challenge 2020 and Double Gold at San Francisco World Spirits Competition. I cannot do a tasting of The Sassenach without bringing in the book Clanlands which will be followed up by a tv series following Sam and Graham’s antics as they tour Scotland and taste many drams en route.
This relatively new company has countless barrels, ranging from small 20 litre barrels to 500 litre sherry barrels and port pipes. Bar Stools, Bottle Racks, Chairs, Clocks, Glassware, Lighting, Mirrors, Steel Products, Tables, Garden Furniture Planters. So one afternoon I popped in to pick 4 bags of off cuts and was greeted by Patrick Keir (Operations Manager) who also helped me to load the bags into my car. On chatting we found out we had a mutual interest in Whisky, at which point he opened a cupboard and pulled out a very old bottling of Tamdhu.
Dr Bill Lumsden is the Director of Distilling, Whisky Creation & Whisky Stocks. The Tayne continues this legend having been finished in in selected Amontillado Sherry casks, a quite unusual finish in Whisky maturation. Taste…Rich and mouth-coating, a fountain of soft and citric fruits, cedarwood, barley sugar, creamy caramel pudding. This is one of my favourite drams in a while, it is an Amontillado sherry finish but there were no excessive sherry notes, I felt that it was more of a red wine cask that was used in the final months of maturation, a delight.
With the most recent existing record of Blue Spot dating back to 1964, the launch will signal the end of a 56-year wait among the global Whiskey community for the reintroduction of Blue Spot, reuniting the historic Spot Family for the first time in over half a century. Building on the foundation of bourbon and sherry casks, the re-imagined Blue Spot includes Whiskey aged in Madeira casks, inspired by the historical inventory of Mitchell & Son and typical of the Spot style of Whiskey. Kevin’s team at Irish Distillers’ Midleton Distillery have been sourcing Madeira wine seasoned casks for over 20 years. The aromas were very elegant, but one had to listen carefully when in came the tropical fruit, mixed spice, granny Smith apples stewing in the pot, Taste…Smooth with a palate coating richness, fresh fruit salad is in charge, a puff of mild white pepper, spice from a ginger snap biscuit, banana and vanilla milkshake, eating mango, pineapple and guava off a lightly toasted stave.
