When I was a young lawyer, in Los Angeles, the Senior Partner in my firm stepped into my office, ostensibly, to introduce me to a new Client. He was an actor (now A-list), in his early 20's, good looking, with a million-dollar smile and a multi-million dollar bank account. The Sr Partner beamed proudly as he listed the client's accomplishments. He said "At 17, this here young man bought a mansion in the Hollywood Hills, owned a Ferrari, a Bentley and 3 Harley-Davidson motorcycles. He has been on the cover of People and Italian Vogue. What were you doing at 17?" he asked smugly... I looked at them both for a moment and replied, "At 17, I volunteered my life and earned the right to wear the Marine Corps uniform while proudly serving my country so that you and (Actor), can buy Mansions and Ferraris." And with that, they turned and left my office in silence. As we celebrate Veterans past and present, remember that the majority of us did not do it for the glory, and certainly not for the money. We did it for you.
