These 2 pieces are now matching and much lighter, just what the client asked for! She brought me a walnut nightstand her grandfather built and an inherited mahogany dresser and wanted both of them to coordinate and be much lighter to go with a coastal vibe! How did I do it? 1. I sanded both of them completely down 2. Then I only stained the mahogany dresser to minimize the orange tones with my go to stain mix of @minwaxusa simply white, dark walnut and special walnut stains using a 1:1:3 ratio! . What’s left? I need to add multiple coats of poly to both and then add the hardware and some pretty blue paper in the drawers! She needs them by this Saturday— I need to hustle!!! After literally days of removing paint, I am finally finished with both the removal of the paint and I have also primed and painted the parts that needed that! What’s next?? Stain, coats of poly, new legs, clean the hinges and screws that were covered in blue paint, reattach the doors, insert the glass in the doors, add new pulls, add pretty paper to the drawers! 14 years of refinishing furniture for clients! I only do custom pieces, meaning clients bring me their own pieces, I refinish them based on what they are wanting and then they pick them up once I’m finished! I typically do about 1000 pieces a year in addition to teaching middle school full time! I have had a consistent 4-6 month waitlist of people waiting to bring me their pieces since 2019– so I must be doing something right! Paint, stain, pulls and paper can instantly coordinate 2 mismatched pieces— which is what I used to help make these 2 pieces coordinate for the client! Here were my steps! 1. Sanded the tops 2. Primed and painted the bases with @rustoleum white primer and heirloom white paint 3. Stained the tops with my custom mix of @minwaxusa simply white, dark walnut and special walnut stains— I use a 1:1:3 ratio 4. Sealed the tops with multiple coats of polycrylic 4. Distressed the edges and added new pulls and paper— I added 2 types of paper to compliment the styles of the owners— his— hunting, hers sage green!! . Organized my shop, found my utility knives and now I have so much more space and I know where everything is! I took a small break from furniture this morning to get this shop in order! I organized everything, relived that big blue piece I was throwing everything on, a client came and picked up 4 pieces so now the shop seems so huge! Of course I didn’t paint these gorgeous antiques!!! . The client brought these 3 stunning pieces and all had some wear and damage on their tops, but their bases were in great shape— just a little dull! . I knew I could restore them with minimal effort, saving her tons of money and allowing her to continue using these updated pieces! . Here were my steps! . 1. I first removed 2 layers of damaged veneer from the middle of the sewing table to reveal gorgeous oak! However, the oak had some imperfections so I had already ordered some new veneer! After discussing it with the client we decided to cancel the veneer (it is a bit expensive) and just have me repair the oak— I think I did an incredible job-one of the gauges was about 2 inches deep! Thanks to some @starbondadhesives glue and some faux finishing techniques— the imperfections were minimized! Later down the road if they wanted me to apply new veneer I could for them! 2. I then sanded all of the tops! 3. Next was stain and I had to use my experience to stain match the newly sanded tops to their original bases.. I did this by applying @minwaxusa early American to all of the tops! The 2 piece hit hutch just needed the coat of early American! The darker piece needed another coat this time with dark walnut stain and the sewing table needed another coat, this time with red mahogany stain! 4. After the stain dried, I applied multiple coats of @minwaxusa to the tops for durability and 1 coat to the bases to give them their shine back! . Now they should be both durable and beautiful in the client’s home and she didn’t have to spend a ton of money for a complete restoration of the entire pieces! . Anthropologie Dupe . I recently transformed an armoire and I was inspired by a pottery barn piece! . But rewind a few months ago and with this piece, I was inspired by the floral Anthropologie pieces! . The client wanted 3 things: 1. Make it lighter 2. Needs a mirror and 2 shelves 3. Make it girly . Here were my steps: I sanded it all down! I screwed an inexpensive mirror into the door I then applied wooden flower appliqués! I tan washed and sealed the entire piece! I painted the mirror to match the wood tones I then cut 2 shelves and installed them as well as I installed some floral wall paper to the interior! . I think this is probably one of my top 10 favorite pieces! One of the most often questions I get asked is about applying protective top coats! While there are soooo many amazing options out there I typically use @minwaxusa polycrylic in various sheens and I apply it with just a cut up tshirt! I also get asked if I do not have a problem with getting streaks! The answer to this is no! As long as I apply it with minimal pressure and do light coats— it always goes on evenly and smoothly! I also sand in between coats with 320 grit sandpaper and wipe away the dust! Typically I apply about 3-6 coats on each piece for durability!!! When we purchased our house in late March I knew one of the first things I wanted to tackle was the exterior stucco of the lower level, the patio, and the front door! Living in a log home, there’s a lot of brown and to highlight the beautiful logs and character of the home, I decided to paint it all black! I started with the stucco around the garage doors to make them pop, then I painted the retaining wall and the entire patio wall as well as updated the patio with some custom built furniture and rugs and then since I had leftover paint, I painted the well worn door!! I would still like to add black shutters and paint the trim black, maybe add some black window boxes and a black metal roof! 3 updated pieces for my high school friend! My sweet friend had inherited all of these special family pieces and she brought them to me to restore and give them new life so she could cherish them and use them in her home as well as pass them down to her own children! Authentic heirloom farmhouse table restored but the original character and imperfections are still very much intact, just like the client asked! The client remembers this being her grandmother’s laundry table and remembers sitting on it as a young child while her grandma did laundry! She inherited it and wanted its character and all of the imperfections preserved, but wanted it to just be a little better! So I sanded down the top. Taped out the top and primed and painted the base heirloom white by @rustoleum Stained the top with @minwaxusa early American stain and sealed it with multiple coats of polycrylic .
