Today was a first for me: I hosted back-to-back whiskey tastings at Lewis Station Winery & Distillery in Lake Mills, Wisconsin, for its Blues, Booze, and BBQ event. It was the first ticketed whiskey event for Lewis Station and turned out to be a huge success! Rob Lewis drew the whiskeys directly from the barrels while folks watched. Then, we got to taste them at barrel proof. The first two were Bourbons distilled from the same batch in 2021. One aged in a 30-gallon #3-charred barrel, the other from a 15-gallon showed the attendees that barrel sizes can significantly impact how the whiskey ages. Next was an American Rye, made from a mash of 86% rye and 14% malted barley and aged just past four years in new, charred oak. The high malt content was eye-opening for many who found it sweeter than anticipated. Last up was a Tennessee Whisky made from a mash of 70% corn, 15% rye, and 15% malted barley. It aged over four years. I polled both groups, and the shocker (to me) was the 15-gallon Bourbon, the clear winner, followed by the Tennessee Whisky. There was an almost even split between the 30-gallon Bourbon and the Rye. In all, this was a lot of fun. The attendees enjoyed themselves and left learning something new. Last night, I hosted a private whiskey tasting in Milwaukee. It was a rooftop party with 25 people in attendance. It was such a fun night, and the whiskeys groups of people preferred were interesting, to say the least. My client had the following request: - 10 Bourbons with a theme - Keep things under $100.00 per bottle - Give us three bottles that are challenging to find but can be found - Nothing barrel-proof/cask-strength My theme was that each Bourbon had to be unique and show a different way to do things, yet not lose its identity. I managed to keep every request except the last: I had a cask-strength Bourbon, but I assured my client that it would drink way under its stated proof. He agreed and approved the list. The group was about a 50/50 split between men and women. Some were very experienced, and some were pretty new to #Bourbon. This is how things turned out: Most women considered Jefferson’s Ocean their favorite, while the men chose Ben Holladay. Everyone loved Barrell’s Amburana finish. Jack Daniel’s Introduces Limited Edition Twice Barreled Tennessee Straight Rye Whiskey Selection #13 in Jack Daniel’s Distillery Series line of experimental whiskeys is barreled twice in new, charred American white oak barrels Lynchburg, Tennessee (July 16, 2024) – The Jack Daniel Distillery introduces Distillery Series Selection #13, a Tennessee Straight Rye Whiskey twice barreled in new, charred American white oak barrels, which is the latest in the distillery’s line of experimental and innovative whiskeys. Like all Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Rye Whiskeys, the latest Distillery Series expression has a unique grain bill of 70% rye, 12% malted barley and 18% corn. The rye whiskey is charcoal mellowed before being matured in a new, charred American white oak barrel. After maturation, the #rye #whiskey was entered into a second new, charred American white oak barrel for an additional two and half years. “Our Tennessee Rye is a take on rye whiskey that is uniquely Jack Daniel’s.
