Every so often I get a DM asking if you can run multiple ventures under one LLC. The answer is yes, but it’s not without risks. Here’s the scoop 🍦: Running multiple businesses under one LLC can save on costs and simplify admin work. Use DBAs to keep each venture’s identity separate. But remember, combining them centralizes risk. If one business faces legal trouble, all your ventures could be affected. To protect yourself, keep separate bank accounts and financial records. High-risk businesses (like construction or food services) might need their own LLC to shield other ventures. Low-risk ones (like consulting or graphic design) can usually share the same umbrella. If you’re not sure which route to go, always reach out to an attorney and accountant to see how it will affect your business. Loving this content? A few years ago, I made the mistake of filing for S-corp status way too early. My accountant handed me a much larger invoice for my taxes than I expected, and I wasn’t making enough for my salary to be considered reasonable. So before you elect S-corp status, you’ll want to consider a few things: 1️⃣ Increased Tax Obligations: S-corps require you to pay yourself a reasonable salary, which means you’ll be on the hook for payroll taxes like Social Security and Medicare. If your business isn’t making enough, this can be a financial strain. 2️⃣ Additional Administrative Burdens: S-corps come with more paperwork and stricter compliance requirements. If you’re not ready for the extra administrative workload, it can be a distraction. 3️⃣ Complexity in Tax Filing: S-corps have more complex tax filing requirements compared to LLCs. If you’re not prepared for the additional accounting and legal fees, it might not be the right time to switch. Make sure your business is truly ready before making the switch to an S-corp. Take it from me, it’s better to wait until the timing is right! If you want to protect your personal information from public records, avoid unwanted solicitations, and shield yourself from potential harassment… 👈🏽 AND maintain a higher level of privacy and security for your business operations… 👈🏽 You should consider forming an anonymous LLC. (And I didn’t even mention the added benefit of reducing the risk of identity theft. The advantages are clear and practical.) Start by filing your LLC in privacy-friendly states like New Mexico, Wyoming, Delaware, or Nevada, where regulations help keep your personal information out of public records. The big takeaway? If privacy is super important to you then you should look at the states who will keep your info private. But along with advantages, there are disadvantages which I’ll discuss in next Tuesday’s post. With all of the major changes I’ve had in my life this year, I just want to have some summer fun like I did in high school and college. No thoughts, just vibes. So far I’ve: 🏌️Signed up for golf lessons 1x a week and Pilates 2x a week. 🌻 I’m also trying to volunteer for the community garden (waiting to hear back on that). 💌 And any invitation I get or event that I find interesting on Eventbrite or Meetups, I’m going. So wish this very introverted girly luck, and should I document and share? Lemme know in the comments. 👇🏾 #floridalife #lifestylechange #introvertproblems #introvertlife #summer2024 #over30club
I’d just opened my email and saw a message from one of my Legal Staple subscribers. She was frantic because a blog had copied sections of her post word for word. My heart sank for her. As a small business attorney, I know how devastating it can be to see your hard work stolen. I immediately jumped into action. Did some research, found the host, and sent a DMCA Takedown notice. After some back and forth, the host finally removed the content. Before I sent it off, I made sure to include everything needed for the notice to be valid like: ✅ Contact information ✅ A description of the copyrighted work ✅ The URL of the infringing content ✅ A statement that you believe the use is unauthorized ✅ A statement under penalty of perjury that the information is accurate ✅ Signature I created a template + guide to help you navigate getting unauthorized content removed from a website. Check out my stories for the link. #womeninbusiness #fempreneur #femaleentrepreneur #businesstips #freedombasedbusiness #businesscoachforwomen #businessmentor #successmindset #growyourbusiness #femalefounders #femaleleaders #businesschicks #soulpurpose #womenleaders #hersuccess
Imagine discovering your original blog post on someone else’s website. Shocking, right? That’s exactly what happened to one of my clients. She found her article, word for word, on another blogger’s site without her permission. Feeling violated and seeking justice, she reached out for help. We quickly drafted a DMCA takedown notice, and thankfully, the post was removed within a week. It was a victory not just for her, but a reminder of the importance of protecting one’s intellectual property. This incident underlines some critical strategies every content creator should employ: 1️⃣ Clearly mark your work with the copyright symbol (©), the year of first publication, and your name to establish ownership. 2️⃣ For photos and videos, use watermarks to act as a deterrent and signal ownership. 3️⃣ For digital products, consider technologies that prevent unauthorized copying or save your content in secure formats. 4️⃣ Inform your followers about the legality of sharing content without permission—awareness can prevent infringement. You can do #4 today by using the ready to use licensing agreement inside of The Legal Edit to add to your website terms and conditions. Let’s uncover the 3 misconceptions about legally protecting your digital products—and what to do instead. And hey. I’m not exactly the “rules are made to be broken” type. Put it this way: I was creating my own summer homework when I was in elementary school... FOR FUN. BUT ... when it comes to protecting your intellectual creations, I’m always down to experiment. So with these axioms ... ... remember this— Sometimes, the advice you hear might work in a pinch or for temporary fixes. However, for long-term business operations and safeguarding your hard work, it’s always best to speak to a lawyer about your specific needs and business context. Read on for the skinny on protecting your digital assets… 1️⃣ Tech Alone Isn’t Enough: Technological protections can help, but they aren’t foolproof. Beyond encryption and access codes, understand your legal rights under copyright law to actively defend against piracy. 2️⃣ Copyright Isn’t All-Encompassing: It’s crucial to know what copyright law does and doesn’t cover. Remember, it protects your unique expression of ideas, not the ideas themselves. 3️⃣ Clarify Your Licensing: Avoid ambiguities by having clear, enforceable licensing agreements that explicitly state what users can and cannot do with your content. This helps prevent misuse and makes enforcing your rights much simpler. You can add this to your terms & conditions. Before you face a copyright emergency, pre-order Plagiarist Proof Emergency Kit. Inside you’ll find safeguards to prevent content from being stolen, tools to detect and monitor infringement, essential templates for notifying infringers and handling content takedowns efficiently, and so much more. You can pre order this kit until Tuesday.
