Do you recognize this cottage? Kicking off my England series with an iconic home in the Cotswolds, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. You'll find this cottage in The Slaughters. Despite the disturbing name, this pair of villages is utterly lovely. Straddling the River Eye, Lower Slaughter is one of the most photogenic places I’ve ever visited. The old Parish of St. Mary stands at the entrance, with a beautiful willow tree and ancient graveyard. Classic honeyed stone cottages sit along the water’s edge, with vibrant flowers bursting from window boxes and pots. Just a short walk northwest lies Upper Slaughter. This area is mainly residential, with classic cottages, wooden gates, and blooming rose bushes. The pretty St. Peter’s Church stands at the northern edge of the village, where the river forms the border. And of course, there's the magnificent Upper Slaughter Manor. This gorgeous estate brings to mind scenes from Pride & Prejudice and Downton Abbey. There's always something new to discover in London 📷 I wish I could tell you exactly where to find this gorgeous street, but the truth is that I don't remember! Often when I go out to take photos in the city, I wander all over the place, chasing whatever catches my eye. In this case, I found myself drawn to a lovely mews somewhere in Mayfair (stay tuned for those photos!). After snapping a dozen shots there, I got a bit lost trying to make my way back to the tube station, and that's when I stumbled upon this beautiful set of row homes. Mondays aren't so bad when they're London snow days 🌨️ Growing up in Michigan, I loved snowy winters. Going sledding, building snowmen, turning on the TV to see if your school is on the closed list--what more could you want as a kid? Sadly, it doesn't snow very often in London. We were super lucky to be here for the blizzard of February 2018, which coincided with our flat-hunting trip. Being an American in London can be embarrassing. Here are some of my cringiest moments 🙈 - Telling people my dog's name is Albus, after the headmaster of Hogwarts - Taking a suit to the dry cleaners and asking if they can press the "pants" - Trying to disguise my American accent when meeting the new neighbors, only to end up spouting a litany of American phrases ("Hey, how's it goin? Where you guys move from? Is it just y'all two?") Despite the typical expat missteps, I think I've settled into British life quite nicely. How do you get around your city? By car, bike, subway, or something else? Growing up in the US, a car is pretty much mandatory. There are a few major cities with decent public transit, but it doesn't come close to London's network of buses, trains, trams, and subways. After years of hour-long driving commutes, parking space hunts, and sub-zero windshield scraping, I am loving my car-free life. That being said, it's hard to fully enjoy the UK travel scene without a car. There are tons of incredible castles, storybook villages, and idyllic landscapes that aren't reachable by public transit alone. And with our US driver's licenses no longer valid in the UK (you can only drive on them for 1 year), one of us must brave the left side of the road and take the UK driving test! These cream-colored buildings reminded me of Bridgerton. Who else is watching that series? If you were hoping to spot tons of Bridgerton's filming locations in London, I'm sorry to say you'll be disappointed! Most of the series' scenes were actually filmed in Bath, where Regency period homes, shops, and cafes are (somewhat) plentiful. Fans of other British period pieces including "The Favourite" and "Enola Holmes" may also recognize Hatfield House in Hertfordshire, where several party scenes were shot. Seeing these grand estates and charming streets has made me even more excited to travel locally this year. We're into the third week of 2021. How are you feeling? This is about the time when people start celebrating their new year's accomplishments or lamenting their struggles. If things are off to a great start for you, that's awesome! But if your 2021 has been adequate (my husband's favorite word) or boring or awful thus far, you aren't alone. Last month, I spoke about setting goals for the new year, a practice I've done for the past decade. Typically, I set a few simple goals and one lofty one. But this year, I was VERY careful to choose easy goals that didn't depend on outside factors. My focus for 2021 is entirely on balancing my health and work--nothing else matters to me as long as I achieve this balance by the end of the year. I felt defeated after missing my work-related goals last year (fellow travel bloggers know my pain!), so it's comforting to know my success lies fully within my locus of control.
