Cambridge University clean sweep of 2019 Boat Race

In the men’s race, Cambridge won the toss for lanes in both races and chose the Surrey (southerly) station, giving them the advantage of the inside of the big Hammersmith bend which is a significant feature of the Championship Course. Their multi-national crew in the men’s race included former junior world sculling champion and Rio Olympian Natan Wegrzycki-Szymczyk of Poland at stroke, with British double Olympic champion James Cracknell in the 2-seat

Be part of the inaugural World Rowing Beach Sprint Finals

The Beach Sprint Finals will be in the southern Chinese coastal city of Shenzhen from 25-27 October 2019 and the timing fits in with the 2019 World Rowing Coastal Championships. The format of beach sprint racing sees participants start on the beach, then run to their boats which are at the water’s edge. The race uses a slalom format around three buoys before heading directly back to the beach where participants must get out of their boats and sprint up the beach to the finish line. The Shenzhen location makes it ideal as the World Rowing Coastal Championships are being held nearby in Hong Kong directly after the Beach Sprint Finals.

100 years on, time to celebrate Australia’s King’s Cup

Australia’s state of New South Wales wrapped up the week by winning all four interstate races, including the King’s and Queen’s Cup, and the Rowing Australia Cup. Coming into the King’s Cup race, New South Wales was the crew to beat, having won the title in 2018 and boasting a stacked line-up which included World Champions Spencer Turrin and Jack Hargreaves and World Championship medallists Kendall Brodie (coxswain), Rob Black and Nick and Alex Purnell. It’s pretty amazing, it’s my first experience in the King’s Cup, words can’t really describe how I’m feeling right now,” said New South Wales rower and Australian national team member Jack O’Brien. New South Wales also picked up the Queen’s Cup trophy by winning the women’s eight race and breaking Victoria’s 14-year winning streak.
