As you go about decluttering and organizing your home, there are three things you need to ask of all of your things. There are a few things that can JUST be beautiful in your home, but but there will be many more things that serve a purpose. Even if you become more strict with what comes into your house, inevitably drop zones and closets and drawers will collect old things, broken things and all manner of papers. The good thing about decluttering is once you start, it’s a little addictive.

We had one bathroom (yup, it got pretty crazy over the holidays when we had extra guests! ), three bedrooms, one small living room, a basement family room and an eat-in kitchen. Use unconventional containers to corral items: a blanket box becomes a filing cabinet in a bedroom; baskets stowed under end tables hold books and blankets; built-in banquette seating like at our old house can store out of season décor or extra bedding. You can go big with one or two items in a small room – which I love to do and can actually make a small space look larger and more elegant.

It’s meant to help you see your space from a decorator’s perspective and give you SOLUTIONS to the mistakes I see all the time. : I’m pretty sure if you’ve ever shopped at a big box furniture store, you’ve made this mistake at least once in your adult life. Instead choose the large pieces you’ll use, perhaps a couch or a large rug, and then base your paint color choice off of those other elements. That’s because a room needs three kinds of lighting: ambient, accent and task lighting.
