AFRICA 🌍🌞 I’ve been in Zanzibar almost a week now, exploring Stone Town and settling into my new home for the next month. I’ll be working here in town for a few weeks, and staying with a local host family while doing so. This is a new experience for me but they have been so incredible and welcoming 🥰 there’s no better way to learn than to be fully immersed in the culture! Starting this new year off by celebrating 3 months sober! 🥳 Before these 90 days, I couldn’t of told you a single day I went without drinking. Every moment from when I woke up was thinking about when I could drink, or when the next one would be, until I was blacked out and passed out - usually by myself. I truly didn’t think life was worth living without alcohol. Countlessss nights I can’t remember, injuries I couldn’t explain, fights I started. I made self-sabotaging decisions and put myself in dangerous situations. I lost my family, numerous friends, and my dignity. I woke up everyday with heavy feelings of guilt and shame. I lived in a constant state of hang-xiety, feeling foggy and irritable. It’s been an interesting and very hard 3 months of learning. I’m still re-learning how to be social, how to have a daily routine that doesn’t involve alcohol, how to deal with my own thoughts lol. Although a lot healthier physically and mentally, the mental clarity comes with its own struggles, especially when it comes to the guilt. My thoughts go out to everyone struggling, especially during this super difficult time in the world. Reach out and remember you’re not alone 🥰 we will all get through this!
