Favorable weather afforded me the opportunity to pay more attention to the scenery around me this second time around, and to ponder the sounds that last time had been drowned out by the hood pulled tightly over my head, and the sights that had gone unseen due to my gaze being preoccupied with navigating the muddy, flooded trail. Descending to an old railroad grade abandoned in the 1930's, the trail meandered along a hillside above the Stillaguamish River and led us beneath the sprawling limbs of some bigleaf maple trees that were impressively adorned with thick layers of moss and plumes of licorice fern. We were here for the trees today, after all, having read Peter Wohlleben's The Hidden Life of Trees for this month's book club. Although the book leans heavily toward anthropomorphism (which the author used as a deliberate device to inspire readers to become curious about, fascinated by, and sympathetic toward trees), I found it to be enjoyable to read, and it certainly opened my eyes to the inner workings and interconnectedness of the trees in a forest.
