The Transylvania Diary

This travel diary comes almost four months after our adventure, but I decided it was about time I captured the essence and jotted down my memories of this enchanting region. A stroll along Strada Nicolae Bălcescu took us past hole-in-the-wall bakeries where we joined the queue of locals lined up for freshly baked goods. We spent a drizzly morning climbing Tampa Hill to take in the views of the compact city below, then rode the red and white cable car back into the city. Whilst walking into the centre, we came across abandoned old buildings oozing with character within metres of monstrous new hotels catering to the winter ski crowd.

Things to do in Rotterdam

If you’re a fan of architecture and design, no visit to Rotterdam would be complete without getting a glimpse of the city’s iconic Cube Houses. The space opens out onto the water complete with a large outdoor seating space – the perfect sunny-day spot for a refreshing craft beer and bite. The former office building of the Holland America Lines was built in 1901 by the architects J. Muller and Droogleever Fortuin, and the signage “Holland America Lijn” can still be seen on the splendid exterior. The eatery boasts a simple, modern interior and outdoor terrace, and serves up reasonably priced fresh pasta dishes with a good selection of accompanying wines.
