Tickets to North Stradbroke Island start from $83 one way for a standard car or $92.50 one way for a 4WD or large car, with passenger fares costing $17 per adult for a return trip (or $9 one way), with discounts for children, students and concession. Take a drive along Main Beach, where you can fish, surf and swim right out of your car or park up along the sand for a great beach day. For some great options check out: Straddie Hotel – one of the main places to eat on the island, the Straddie Hotel offers great views, a big menu and a great selection of cocktails. Beach camping is available at both Main Beach and Flinders Beach, although you will need a 4WD to access them, as well as a vehicle access permit.
During our visit to Fraser Island we based ourselves at Kingfisher Bay Resort for three nights and had such a great time. If you’re looking to stay a little bit closer to the main beach, then Eurong Beach Resort on the eastern side of the island is the perfect place to base yourself. The location of Eurong Beach Resort can’t be beaten if you’re planning to spend the majority of your time driving up and down Seventy-Five Mile Beach, but are still looking for a comfortable place to stay at night. We had such a great time during our visit to Fraser Island, and loved our stay at Kingfisher Bay Resort.
To take your 4WD across to Fraser Island on the Kingfisher Bay Ferry Service starts from $190 per vehicle in the off peak season, with an extra $5 per driver and passengers. The other option is the Fraser Island Barge, which operates between Inskip Point and Fraser Island all day. Departing from the Kingfisher Bay Jetty at 12pm each day, the West Coast Explorer Tour goes for about 3 hours and you get to explore some of the prettiest places between Fraser Island and Harvey Bay. ’s no need to worry, you can still have the full Fraser Island experience with Fraser Explorer Tours.
Drover’s Sunset Cruise with Outback Aussie Tours to enjoy a leisurely sunset cruise down the Thomson River. During your stay make sure you jump on one of Outback Dan’s tours of the property for a guided tour and drinks and nibbles at their favourite sunset spot on the station. If you’re not travelling in a self-contained caravan and are looking for somewhere to stay, check out Saltbush Retreat’s rustic accommodation, right in the heart of town.
