Octavia Butler’s Kindred largely explores the journeys of Dana, a black woman from southern California who is abruptly grasped from her home and transported to the antebellum South of Maryland. Butler greatly illuminates the history of slavery through many channels such as her vivid imagery and use of science fiction, Butler conveys to us that enslaved blacks during this time actually have an identity.
