Dairy Free Lemon Cheesecake Bites

Think you can’t have cheesecake if you’re dairy free? Think again! There are some great cream cheese alternatives out there now and some of them are as low carb as the real thing. My favorite is Kite Hill Almond Milk cream cheese, as it has no junky fillers, soy, or vegetable oils

Low Carb, Gluten Free Banana Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting

This low carb, gluten free banana cake recipe uses bananas despite their natural higher carb count. I love that the bananas don’t add many carbs to the final count since there are only two small ones in this entire recipe, but they do add tons of flavor, moisture, and some wonderful healthy nutrients. This cake makes a fabulous snack or dessert at just 4.8 net carbs per serving (after deducting the fiber). My husband enjoys it cold though I prefer it left out of the fridge for a while so the cream cheese frosting is nice and creamy.

EOPancreas: A Closed Loop Insulin Patch Pump in Development

Earlier this month, EOFlow, an emerging medical device company with offices in Seoul, South Korea and San Jose, California, announced that its closed loop Automated Insulin Delivery, the EOPancreas System, received Breakthrough Device Designation by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration. The upcoming EOFlow closed loop system, the EOPancreas, combines a continuous glucose monitor with an insulin patch pump, and is set to rival the tubeless OmniPod. “EOFlow was founded to democratize wearable drug delivery solutions by providing intelligent, connected solutions for patients managing chronic conditions at globally-competitive price points”, according to Jesse Kim, founding CEO of EOFlow, “and we see the Breakthrough Device designation as an important validation of our business model. The EOPancreas System is being developed with the support JDRF  to address the continuing global challenges associated with diabetes management through lowering the barriers to blood glucose control for people living with Type 1 diabetes.

FDA Rejects Sanofi-Lexicon Oral Medication for Type 1 Diabetes

The FDA has denied approval of Sanofi and Lexicon’s drug, sotagliflozin, as an add-on to insulin therapy in the treatment of Type 1 diabetes. Sotagliflozin, works by inhibiting the proteins SGLT1 and SGLT2 to help regulate blood glucose levels and reduce the risk of weight gain. Sotagliflozin blocks much of this activity, and people with type 2 diabetes taking it tend to lose weight (the increased urine glucose could account for a 200 calorie per day energy deficit) and have lower blood pressure, as well as having a substantial reduction in blood glucose levels. However, in people with Type 1 diabetes (or Type 2’s with low insulin production), the drug has been linked to the potentially life threatening condition of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA).
