From taking CDCA hours after our son was born, to finishing requirements early, Happy Bday to my superhuman! ♥️ Graduation is a little over a month away. 🥳 Greg will be joining his mentor’s FFS practice after graduation. So, our family is making the big move to Chicago. 😄 There are very few people I meet with Greg’s work ethic and commitment to dentistry. I couldn’t be more proud of how he’s taken 110% advantage of his education in dental school and still manages to be just as present as a dad. Love you to the moon and back bubs! ♥️🥰

72 year old patient swallowed his partial denture looked for it for days. 🥲 Patients are always asked to remove things such as contacts, dentures, etc. because of the nature of surgical procedures and the intubation process. The poor patient had a different experience it seems, and who knows the sequence of actual events, but it turns out his partial was right there with him the entire time 🙃! We’re officially landlords 🥳😅 | A life update ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Greg and I have been focusing on adapting to our new life after so many changes. Last week I went to work orientation & met everyone at the office. I don’t start work for a while still, but I’m getting excited/nervous as the weeks go by. ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ This past weekend was a big one! We moved into a new apartment and are officially renting out our investment condo. We lived in our condo for about a year, made some beautiful updates and got it ready for our future tenants. It’s our first step towards a real estate revenue stream. Can’t wait to share some Reno Reels with you all! ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ We’re also still running our business, so be patient with me as I start to reply to all DMs as life starts settling down 🙏🏾♥️⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Hope application season is going well and my dental school peeps are enjoying a breath of fresh air this summer. My Doctor of Dental Surgery title won’t have my maiden name. Did I even earn it then?Y/N💁🏾‍♀️⠀ ⠀ I made the choice 9 years ago to change my last name from Veloz to Tokarev. 💃🏽 It honestly wasn’t so scandalous at the time. I was raised by a single mom who did an incredible job all on her own, but as a kid, having a different last name as my mom, marked a difference between me and my peers. 😬⠀ ⠀ So, as silly as it sounds, it was important for me to share the same last name as my partner, so that maybe in the future our children would as well. ☺️⠀ ⠀ …👀⠀ ⠀ What I didn’t foresee was how almost a decade later, this choice would practically leave me out once again, this time from a modern movement of women with doctoral level education 😌.⠀ ⠀ All power to us as women for having choices.💪🏾 However, is it just me or does it seem like this movement takes some backhanded jabs?⠀ ⠀ Take some “empowering quotes” which state that if you choose to let your maiden name disappear, you somehow are doing a disservice to the family who got you to where you are, all by not acknowledging them by at least hyphenating! 🥸⠀ ⠀ It’s giving “check for hyphens or call it tone deaf” vibes 😅.⠀ ⠀ I would lie if I didn’t say that I DO regret that sometimes patients will have to find out by surprise that I’m not in Russian, and instead very Afro-Cuban, a whole different vibe 😂. ⠀ ⠀ All in all, I’ve made peace that I’ll have to work a little harder to make my background clear when I transition to private practice. 😜⠀ ⠀ However, it would be nice to not have it be implied that by a maiden name being MIA from a diploma, it it gives too much attention to your partners instead of us. ⠀ ⠀ While I totally agree this is our monologue, 😉it reminds me of how body shaming can go both ways, but that’s a topic for another day! ⠀ ⠀ My point is, can we just applaud both last name choices for what they are?⠀ ⠀ Hyphen or not, the outcome is still the same. Some bad a*** women are out there killing the professional game. 🥰

To all my nerdy Latinas, the ones with the big dreams and the loud laugh…⠀ ⠀ Si se puede!! 😜⠀ ⠀ I hope my abuelita can see this. She’s the reason my mom and I were able to leave Cuba for a better life. Me graduating a doctoral level program is so much more than this degree. It’s the sacrifice it took, the people we left behind. The family I never got have.⠀ ⠀ I wouldn’t be here without all the people who believed in me every step of the way. The ones who saw who I was before I did. The ones who saw that girl, the one in the photos wearing glasses, the one with the curly hair who loved her keyboard and still loves music. But most of all, the girl in the last photo, who just wanted to her grandma to be proud of her. ⠀ ⠀ It’s important to understand that many of the spaces we sometimes dare to walk into de “atrevidas,” were not built with our circumstances in mind. Most of the time it requires removing yourself from the familiarity of your home, your culture, your safety blankets.⠀ ⠀ Don’t overthink it. Just get it done. ⠀ ⠀ They might tell you you’re too much. ⠀ ⠀ Too loud. Too outspoken. The opportunities I’ve had in Clinic, I owe to my mom & my Spanish speaking patients ☺️⁠ ⁠ From 4th to 9th grade, my mom made me sacrifice 1 of my electives in school in order to take a formal Spanish class. 😐⁠ ⁠ Of all things, why was Spanish, a language I already spoke, limiting me from taking other electives? 😭⁠ ⁠ Today, the ability to professionally establish rapport with my patients, acknowledge their concerns, and evaluate their pain, all in a language they feel most comfortable in, has proven invaluable. 🥰⁠ ⁠ Being one of the few Spanish speakers in my clinic has given me almost instant access to cases I would not have otherwise. Apart from these patients referring their friends and family over the last two years, I sometimes will gain a patient just because I happened to be around to translate. Thus, my mom's persistence and my patients' appreciation of our bond, is the reason why I'm remotely close to not being as severely behind as I should be after my hospitalizations last year. ⁠ Due to seeing the effects of using Spanish as my own asset, Josie Dental became the first dental account to feature quick & easy dental Spanish lessons on social media & inspired other creators to do the same. 👊🏾Since then, I have donated my time to live presentations on dental terminology and have developed a better idea of how to approach teaching Spanish specifically to those in the dental field! ⁠✨⁠ ⁠ I'm excited to announce that in 🚨June 2022🚨, I will be launching the first online interactive dental Spanish crash course on Decode Dental.
