The property resides north of the French Quarter in the Marigny District, consisting of a repurposed church, school, rectory and convent on Burgundy Street. The second perk was different though similarly glorious, in that the Hotel Peter and Paul has an onsite coffee presence called The Elysian Bar. Located in the rectory, The Elysian Bar is a cafe and bar run by the same team behind Bacchanal Wine , with excellent libations and terrific coffee available to hotel guests and locals alike. The espresso, pulled short/medium with brown crema, smacked of chocolate, cream, blood orange, tangerine, basil, cucumber and a little hibiscus, proving sweet and bright.
Situated in the old town of Fort Plain, this coffeehouse sits in a beautiful white-and-grey storefront along with a rear entry complete with picnic table and seating. The espresso, pulled short with brown crema, smacked of chocolate, caramel, lemon, grapefruit, graham cracker, a little almond and a bit of oats, proving sweet and a tad tart. If I still lived in Upstate New York, this would be a frequent visit in my cross-state travels, but nonetheless I shall be content to visit when the occasion is extended. If you happen to be driving on I-90 past Fort Plains or visiting the area, definitely give Highwheeler a visit for some great coffee.
While I am a fan of all things history, ironically the canals were secondary to my recent visit as I had arrived firstly to try a relatively new (at least to me) coffee roaster called Steamworks Coffee. Located right along the canal in a single brick building, Steamworks established a great first impression with its beautiful landscaping, convenient parking lot and sweeping canal vistas. The espresso, pulled short/medium with brown crema, smacked of chocolate, passion fruit, orange zest, vanilla, 2% milk and a little strawberry, proving smooth and sweet. Sadly (or fortunately depending on your opinion) the canal has largely been covered over in places like Syracuse, but for folks looking to see what used to be, there are still a few towns that have kept their canal heritage and charm, and if you had to pick just one to visit, I would suggest none other than Lockport.
While I definitely could have stuck around Tipico for hours, I had a few more stops beckoning me and sadly had to make an exit. The filtered Costa Rica also bestowed a fanfare of flavor, with smooth notes of honey, sweet milk, wheat, apple, elderberry, birch beer and a little black tea. While I definitely could have stuck around Tipico for hours, I had a few more stops beckoning me and sadly had to make an exit. made the trip less enjoyable, or maybe it was because my first taste of authentic buffalo wings was not nearly as euphoric as I had hoped (to this day, I have still not had amazing wings within Buffalo).
