Trying to balance life and work and family is a task in itself. When you add in homeschooling things can suddenly seem too much to handle. Anyone who has ever decided to take on the responsibility of educating their own children has been in the same position. You’re not alone! I have been homeschooling, in one format or another, for the better part of 13 years and I’m not done yet. I will be the first to admit that I am FAR from an expert, but I have made poor choices and learned lessons. Join me on this journey and let’s navigate the trenches together!

In these pages I wish to impart some of my knowledge and experiences to help you create the best education possible for your kids. Over the years, I have found a wealth of information to help me along my path. As my daughter has gotten older, information has gotten slimmer. Navigating homeschooling high school and pending college, has been a struggle. My hope is that by passing along some of the things I’ve learned and tools I’ve found, your path will be a little less bumpy. I’m just getting started so things may be slow for a while, but I have tons of BIG ideas.

I'm Just Here for the pi (Day)

The ratio of a circle’s circumference (the distance around it) to its diameter (the distance across it) is ALWAYS equal to pi, also written as π. According to NASA-JPL director and chief engineer for NASA’s Dawn mission, Marc Rayman, for JPL’s highest accuracy calculations, which are for interplanetary navigation, they use 3.141592653589793. The House of Representatives supports the designation of a ‘Pi Day’ and its celebration around the world … and encourages schools and educators to observe the day with appropriate activities that teach students about Pi and engage them about the study of mathematics. Divide the total number of toothpicks by the number of line-crossing toothpicks, and multiply by two.

The Responsibility of Time

When starting to plan for high school, sit down and make a list of all the courses that need to be completed, according to your state regulations. If your child knows what they want to study in college, it’s a good idea to compare that list with undergraduate courses in their chosen major. Once you have a list of required/chosen courses, sort them into each year of high school in which they will be completed. It was totally up to her what time she started her day and what time she ended her day, but each of the items on the list had to have a time allotment.

10 ways to Celebrate the 100th Day of School

Homeschooled or conventional schooled, what kids don’t like to take a break from schedules and lessons to do something fun? Depending on when you started your school year, the 100th day of school usually falls somewhere in the month of February. It may seem like a silly thing to celebrate, but sometimes silly is just what’s needed. , I don’t know of one teenager that would pass up the chance to be goofy (and skip school), at least in the confines of their own home where no one else can see them of course.

Valentine’s Project – Learning Technology in 3D

Now that Christmas is over, and the decorations are back in storage for another year (well, hopefully ), it’s time to start looking ahead and Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. For the past six months, I’ve been “substituting” for middle school General Science, high school Physical Science, Technology, and Robotics and Electronics at the homeschool Options program that my daughter has attended for the past 8 years (more discussion of that in a later post). And then my daughter reminded me of her love of 3D design and printing and suggested I create projects for the kids to complete. It’s a basic program that still has functionality, is fairly easy to use, allowed me to create “classes” so I could see what the kids were working on and provide help if needed, and is free.
