Highlights
Lann Boon Asia Cafe – San Diego, CA

This was the first time I tried Nam Kao [$8.95] (also spelled Nam Khao, according to Google) and it is is a Lao crispy rice salad or Lao fried rice ball salad. CC told us that they take rice, form it into balls, fry it, and then make the salad out of the fried rice balls. You can see a video here of how Nam Kao is made: https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=RQkhAwvuX5I What I like about this dish is the crispy bits from the fried rice balls. The last item the three of us sampled at Lann Boon Asia Cafe was the E-SAN sausage [$7.95] and this was SPICY.

LA Visit to Sqirl, Mason’s Dumplings, The Pie Hole

I read an article online about how Mason’s Dumpling Shop would run out of dumplings by the afternoon, but luckily that wasn’t the case for us. It’s a toss up between the boiled dumplings and these pan fried ones – I can’t decide on a favorite! These had a fair amount of soup in them and luckily were not as boiling hot as other soup dumplings I’ve tried (no one was hurt eating hot soup dumplings on this trip). It’s a pie with an Oreo crust and potato chip crust, peanut butter filling, chocolate ganache, and topped off with potato chips.

The Taco Stand – North Park

Let’s talk about my FAVORITE THING here at the Taco Stand which were these Al Pastor tacos [$2.99]. Jake actually also ordered the Al Pastor burrito [$6.99] which is like a bigger version of the taco but wrapped in a flour tortilla. It’s the same meat they use for the regular carne asada so it was good overall, but I just don’t like beans in my tacos. We got some rice [$1.29], beans [$1.29], plus chips and guacamole [$4.99].
