The first set of stairs will be a cut string design where the treads are open, this means that no base rail is needed as the spindles will mortised into the treads themselves. Using a spindle wither end clamped in place gave the rail something to sit on and then there were some angles to sort where the handrail met the ceiling of the next staircase. Until now the main part of teh newel was just dry fit so once all was ok with angles and joins, a generous helping of wood glue went in to the newel base and dowel so we could get the joins all tweaked at the same time to get it all tight and seamless. Finally with a cocktail of wood dyes we got the posts and rails matching and then finished with OSMO satin PolyX as we have done with all the wood in the house.
Sharing the our life of DIY and Making The Restoration Lets get started on these stairs! First job was to start chopping at that horrible metal railing we have put up with for the past 4 years! This needed some temporary support to keep things safe while we were doing the work before we could make a start on the newel posts and bases. Nothing about our staircases are simple, but hey that is t eh general rule in this old house.
The time has finally come to create some more disruption in the house and get one of the last renovation jobs For those who have not followed from the start, our stairs were somewhat brutally destroyed during the 60s/70s when the previous owners opted for the minimalist look! We will be featuring all the stages of the restoration of our Victorian staircase in the next few videos but here is a little preview to show what’s coming. Sharing the our life of DIY and Making The Restoration We visited my sisters house and as a birthday present to her she asked for a Brick BBQ. Here’s our attempt, as you can see it was a team effort as I picked up the near 50 bricks and cement from B and Q and then carried them from the car to the side of her house. We had our trusty little helper again and got a few other jobs done for my sister. Painted her fence, fixed her bathroom light and put up some hooks for mirrors and pictures.
