2018 Deer Harvest Stats

Hunters in New York harvested an estimated 227,787 deer during the 2018-19 hunting seasons, approximately 12 percent more than the previous season, State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Basil Seggos announced today. The estimated deer take included 114,402 antlerless deer and 113,385 antlered bucks

The latest from ADKHunter…

You wait all year for deer season and it comes down to one final week; two if you hunt the late muzzleloading season. There isn’t a hunter out there who doesn’t want snow to hunt on, but too much of a good thing is possible for the hunter spending a lot of time on foot. While this hunter doesn’t mind hunting in the rain, short of the downpours, I prefer to slow down and maybe take a stand or spend some time still-hunting through some hemlocks, rather than brush-busting through a deer drive and getting my tail soaked. Almost Here: Let the countdown begin to deer season as the Northern Zone early archery season begins Thursday, Sept. 27.

NYS Outdoorsmen Hall of Fame Honors North Country Sportsmen

The NYSOHOF is an organization dedicated to honoring those individuals who have spent many years preserving our outdoor heritage, working for conservation, or enhancing our outdoor sports for future generations. Ed Gardephe (Clinton County) has been a leader in many conservation causes for decades, including involving 4-H in bluebird education and bluebird house building at the Conservation Field Days. Kenyon Simpson (Warren County) is one of the grassroots instructors and members of the steering committee of NYS 4H Shooting Program. This year this award is given to William Lloyd (Herkimer County) for his initiative in founding and establishing funding for the Janice and Paul Keesler Memorial Award which awards scholarships to deserving college youth pursuing a degree in some form of wildlife management.

Hearing Held on Bill to Modernize Pittman-Robertson Act

In late January 2019, Congressman Austin Scott (GA-08) introduced H. R. 877 with the bipartisan Congressional Sportsmen’s Caucus leadership  Rep. Marc Veasey (TX-33), Rep. Debbie Dingell (MI-12), and Rep. Richard Hudson (NC-08). H.R. 887 would also clarify that one of the purposes of these funds is to provide financial and technical assistance to the states for hunter and recreational shooter recruitment, retention, and reactivation (R3); hunter education programs; and the education of the public on the contributions that hunters and recreational shooters make toward wildlife conservation. The collective hunting and conservation community considers PR Modernization flexibility essential in stabilizing finances for state wildlife agencies tasked with conserving fish and wildlife with constricted budgets due to dwindling hunter participation. The passage of H. R. 877 would be the first step forward to permit state fish and wildlife agencies, and the collective hunting and conservation community, to address participation rates in hunting and to work to ensure that agencies maintain their capacity to manage America’s wildlife and natural resources now, and into the future.
