Because there can never be too much joy❤️ I remember how terrified he was after reaching the top of the tubing launch area. It was much higher, longer, and scarier than he thought, staring up from the bottom. I’d manually hauled the double tube up the steep hill because I wanted to sit with the little one on his first super tubing experience, but he’d made it clear he could only come down if George came up. Knowing I was disappointed about missing his reaction, George captured this moment as they flew down the mountain. To see his fears turn to happiness and joy filled me and brought the biggest smile to my face. He did it! Throwback to the time we ambitiously took our kids on a 4-mile paddle, not a float, an active paddle trip, to 2 caves, and George get towed back after being pushed around by the wind and having no help paddling. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Ace and I were long gone and had no idea what was happening, but I wouldn’t have been able to help because I didn’t know what to do. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Fast forward to June 2022, when we participated in the Paddle Leadership Academy and acquired many skills that could’ve been helpful in that situation. Since graduating, we’ve completed a rescue when a family capsized at camp, and the same kid that slept through being towed back sat in between us as we worked. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The 4-day course is led by @annaclevesque with Mind Body Paddle, @gerryseavo with the Explore Kentucky Initiative, and @tnriverline programs staff. It’s an excellent program putting more BIPOC leaders on the water. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The PLA equipped us with skills, knowledge, confidence, and community. ⁣If you had met me ten years ago, there’s no way I would’ve believed we could live out so many of our adventure dreams right here in Alabama. We needed to move out west or at least to Chattanooga, but we certainly couldn’t stay in Alabama. One trip to DeSoto Falls (on our way from Chattanooga) changed our minds, and the potential of what could be right where we live was born. Thank God for the awakening. What makes a perfect family trip? Besides simply being together, an ideal trip is a nice mixture of city and small-town adventures for us. So after our stay in OKC, we visited Chickasaw Country, about an hour away from the city, and explored the rich history, amazing landscapes, and charming restaurant scene. The best Huntsville hike when you’re short on time is, hands down Jones Valley Loop at Blevins Gap Nature Preserve North. It has all the good stuff, is less than a mile to complete, and is almost always empty. It can be done on a lunch break with time left to eat or extended by hitting up one of the connectors in the preserve. One of my favorite things to do when I’m in a funky mood, besides heading outside, is look back at old memories. I searched for “spring” in my album, and these images came up from the first time we ever walked behind a waterfall. It was such an incredible feeling. I was so proud we experienced it here in our home state of Alabama rather than on an elaborate or expensive vacation. It allowed us to share our motto that “adventure can happen every day wherever you are” with the boys. This hike included many firsts for us: First true water crossing First time using a rope on a trail First time playing in the sand in the middle of the forest and First time in the beloved sipsey wilderness Looking back at these pictures and seeing pure joy and happiness on our faces made me smile.
