๐ง Did you know? ๐ง The red clay roofs, which you can see on this photo of Town Hvar and my previous post from Split, have been around the Adriatic coast since the ancient Greeks and Romans. In Latin the material was known as terra cotta, which meant baked earth. To make them have a half-piped shape, the maker used to bend the flat tile over his thigh. After shaping, the tiles were baked in a kiln at around 1000 Celsius. If you are travelling around the Croatia and its coast, you can see how almost every house has the exactly the same roof. I think the ones in Dubrovnik are the most famous. Don't you think it's quite impressive how this tradition has kept throughout all these centuries? โจ ๐ view from the Hvar Fortress ๐ Don't forget to share and save this post! ๐ ____________________________________
๐ด Riva and its iconinc palm trees ๐ด The most important and the most popular place in Split is the Riva. Like I already mentioned in my previous post with the palm trees, Riva is a long promenade next to the sea and with a lot of restaurants and cafes where you can just sit for the whole day and watch people passing by ๐ It is a cities living room where you can enjoy your afternoon coffee, or drinks in the evening with your friends. It also hosts various cultural and entertainment events. Even if you're not a fan of big crowds, you just need to at least pass it because Riva is just a place to be when you're in Split! โ๏ธ ๐ Splitksa Riva ๐ Don't forget to save this post for future reference! ๐ ____________________________________________
๐ Marjan Vidilica in Split ๐ One of the best views of Split can be seen from the hill Marjan, where this photo was captured. Marjan hill is located on the western side of the city and and you can approach this wonderful viewpoint by taking the stairs from the western coast. I do have to warn you, there are a lot of stairs ๐ But when you finally reach the view point you get rewarded with this breathtaking view. You can also see some of the neighbouring islands ๐ also just next to the viewpoint there is a restaurant called @teraca_vidilica where you can have your favourite drink or dine with the most outstanding view! โจ In my stories I will also post the way/stairs which you have to take to the top, so stay tunned for more! ๐ธ ๐ Marjan Vidilica ๐ Don't forget to save this post for future reference! ๐ ___________________________________________
๐ด Tropical vibes ๐ด Where you asking for those tropical vibes? Well Split is then a perfect place for it! The Riva is a promenade just at the sea and close to the harbour, if you want to hop on one of the islands close by ๐ Also it offers quite a big variety of cafes and restaurants where you can just enjoy the sea view and people watching, which can always be fun ๐ I know I can for sure love to be at this place now since the weather in the Netherlands is just awful โ๏ธ Where would you wish to be at the moment? ๐Severova ulica, Split ๐ Donโt forget to save this post for future reference! ๐ ______________________________________
City Lodge - Town Hvar Iโm bringing you back to Hvar again for this beautiful building - City Lodge! It was first mentioned in the late 1289, even though the building of the new lodge started in the 15th century and was finally finished in the 16th century. It was burned down in 1571 during the Turkish invasion, but luckily they managed to renovate it! During the Venetian rule this building was a public courthouse, public auctions for lease of the taxes and custom duties were held here as well. Adjacent of the Dukeโs Palace was pulled down in the beginning of the 20th century due to the construction of the Empress Elizabethโs hotel. Kursalon, or the hotelโs cafe, was in the lodge at the time, as well as the reading room, ballroom and meeting place for the local social elite โจ ๐Palace Elizabeth, Hvar Heritage Hotel ๐ Donโt forget to save this post for future reference ๐ ______________________________________
Welcome to Trogir! Just 25 km north from Split, history of this beautiful city on the Dalmatian coast is almost 2000 years old! Throughout the history Trogir was under the rule of Greeks, Romans, Venice and France, which all left some mark on this historic city In 1997 the old town of Trogir was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. No wonder the city was packed with tourists when we went on a day trip there! We visited a lot of places this year, but I can say that here we saw the most tourists. It was hard to take photos, because there was always a horde of people around us. So it didnโt really seem like covid even exited there ๐ On this photo you can see a part of the Kamerlengo Fort from the 15th century. The entrance is 15 kunas ( ~ โฌ 2,00 ) and you can explore the whole fortress ๐ฐ ๐Kamerlengo Fort ๐ Donโt forget to save this post for future reference ๐ _______________________________________
๐ฐ Fortica , Hvar ๐ฐ The town fortress, or how itโs commonly known as Fortica and ล panjola, is located on a hill around hundred meters above the northern part of the Hvar Town. Through centuries this fortress with its town walls, protected the town and its port from various threats โ๏ธ Fortica is dating back from the 16th century, but itโs foundations lie on a historic fortification from the 1st half of the 1st millennium BC, protecting the Illyrian settlement which existed on the hillside. During the Late Antique, it was a site of a Byzantine citadel, most probably built in the 6th century AD ๐ Construction of the present day fort began in 1282, when Hvar was under the Venetian rule. Due to the threat of Turks, the fort was expanded in the middle of the 16th century. It saved the lives of the local people who managed to find shelter during the attack of the Turks in 1571. In the half of the 19th century, Hvar Town lost its military strategic importance after which the fortress was left โfor the fairies to dance in at nightโ according to the local folklore ๐ง๐ผโโ๏ธ Luckily in 1971, Fortica was adapted as an exclusive catering facility with an impressive viewpoint which you can see in my stories โจ You can enter this well preserved fortress for 50 kuna, which is around โฌ6,61. It also has a small caffe inside the fortress, so you can refresh yourself a bit after a longer climb. โ ๏ธ Also due to the high temperatures in July and August at this island, I advise you to visit this fortress later in the afternoon. It can be quite hard for some people to climb on a 30+ degrees quite a lot of stairs and a small hill. So make sure you always have enough water with you! โ ๏ธ ๐ Fortica, Hvar Town ๐๏ธ Donโt forget to save this post for future reference ๐๏ธ __________________________________________
Welcome to Hvar! ๐ Island Hvar has the most UNESCO heritage sights than any other island in the world. It is the sunniest island in Europe. It is the birthplace of organised tourism in Europe that started in 1868. It is a home of the oldest public theatre in Europe, dating back to the late 1612 ๐ญ Are you a wine lover? Then I can assure you that you will drink the best wine on this island. Since it is the sunniest island, it is suitable for vineyard cultivation. Some of Croatiaโs best wines originated exactly from this island ๐ท Do you also love to party? Thatโs not a problem as well, since town Hvar is famous for having some of the best parties. Just on the neighbouring island, called Pakleni islands, are dedicated for that. A part of Ultra Europe Festival is happening here as well ๐๐ผ Have I convinced you enough to visit this amazing island one day? โ๏ธ ๐view of St. Markโs Church, town Hvar ๐ Save this post for future reference ๐ _____________________________________

๐ Umag, Croatia ๐ Umag is a small city in the region Istria in Croatia. It is actually the 1st city you reach when you approach Istria from Western Europe. This city has only around 13,000 inhabitants, it has beautiful hills with fortifications and the sea is crystal clear! You can also swim from May until October because the sea is still a bit warm ๐คฟ All the streets are made from stone plates and are surrounded by these gorgeous houses with local shops and ice cream shops on the ground floor ๐ฆ Normally this street would be filled with people, but I visited this little town in autumn, 2017. It was quite nice to have the city all to myself without the huge crowds of tourists. ๐Giuseppe Garibaldi street ๐ Donโt forget to save this post for future reference! ๐ ________________________________

โช Sint-Gertrudiskerk โชโ โ This church has such an eventful history! The current building was finished in 1477, but there are some speculations that there was a different church located on the same spot because this tower is a century older than the current body of the church.โ โ During the Eighty Years' War (the Dutch War of Independence) this church has served as a military depot and in 1586 it became a reformed church where some parts were torn apart and the stones were reused to straighten the fortification.โ โ In 1987 the church was returned to Catholic worship. Even though the interior looks intact, most of the parts were brought from other Catholic churches in the city. โ โ I have a fun fact for you: the church has 5 organs and 3 of them are considered as national monuments! โ โ I will post more photos of this church in my stories ๐โ โ ๐ Kerkstraatโ โ ๐ Don't forget to save this post for future reference!โ โ _________________________________________
๐ Showing some love ๐โ โ Sometimes I just have to pop our photo here. Especially when the scenery around us is this beautiful! โ โ This cute pavilion is located just behind the Sint-Gertrudiskerk and it is an actual hidden gem of the city. To be honest, we almost missed it. And I believe you can easily just pass by it, if you're not looking at the right direction.โ โ This spot reminded me of the similar pavilion which is located in Zagreb. ๐ฐ Markiezenhof ๐ฐ If you find yourself in Bergen op Zoom one day, @markiezenhof has to be on your list as well! ๐ Markiezenhof is the oldest city palace in the Netherlands where lords and marquises used to live. โ๏ธ Summer in the city โ๏ธ Every time before we go somewhere, I check the book โNederland - Eropuit in elk seizoenโ from @reisreport which I got from Nick as a Christmas gift ๐ Thanks to their book, thatโs how I stumbled upon this little alley. It was described as one of the prettiest streets in Bergen op Zoom and I just had to see why! I am so happy I did, because I met this cute boy just chilling in the shades and avoiding the summer heat. Of course I had to meet him and give him some cuddles, otherwise that wouldnโt be me ๐ But other than this cute doggo, who posed perfectly for my photos, the street is gorgeous with beautiful buildings which are decorated with some lovely greenery.
