Have you ever had something completely blindside you and turn your life upside down? Not a very fun experience… But, do you also remember someone or something that absolutely saved you from that very moment? 🙏🏻 That saving grace for Melanie and me was @rmhc. The day Melanie gave birth to Eli was extremely difficult for us. Seconds after he was born, he had to be passed through a window to the next room to start medications and prep for surgery.😔 In the midst of the stress from childbirth, and now with Eli’s life in the hands of Primary Children’s best surgeons, @rmhc provided the little boosts to make it through. In the hospital, there was a Ronald McDonald House Charity family room. In that room, there were TVs, couches, food, beds, and showers for us parents to use. It was in that room where we could meet with family & friends, eat a warm home-cooked meal, and feel like the stress could be checked at the door. #RMHC was key to keeping us sane and keeping our family together. What you put in determines what you get out. Your mind is the most important asset you have, so what do you hope to see in your life? I’ve been using the @wakingupapp by @samharrisorg to help me train my mind so I can be a better dad. We’ve been under some stress lately (Blake going into surgery tomorrow definitely adds to that) and I’ve been learning how stress really takes a toll on you. 😣 To combat that, I’ve been trying to use #mindfulnessmeditation as a way to regain control and train my mind. I’m still new to the practice but can feel the positive effects such as increased patience and ability to manage stress.🧠 It’s super handy to have this ability to take a step back when you notice stress and then have the ability to tackle big problems a small piece at a time. 🤘🏻 Now, this isn’t to say that binge watching Netflix on a Wednesday night is bad for you if you need it to relax for a bit. We’ll, didn’t see this coming now did we? 🙃 Time to add “broken a bone” to Mr. Blake’s life list. (Elbow to be specific) To answer the first question on everyone’s mind, yes he’s still an absolute goofball and is doing well. Now trying to give me a heart attack while he virtually tries to break his other elbow while running around🤦🏻‍♂️ #secondborn #secondchild Second, he got this injury jumping off a slide. You know, the thing he does 100000x but this ONE time it goes wrong 😖 #life Fatherhood has its challenges. This is yet another one. Not so much from the physical aspect of caring for Blake, but the mental strain of watching your child suffer. You can try to make him comfortable, set up doctor appointments, give him pain medicine, etc. But watching him be in pain is something else. You wanna take it away. But you can’t. And you let time work it’s magic. These are the moments that I feel test my character as a father that push me to rise up to the occasion. And, make me realize that you really would do anything for your kids ❤️ Have you gone through this experience with your kids before? I’ve given these boys a lot… food, clothes, shelter, my good looks, my great jokes, and my 🍑 (ok maybe just Blake. Sorry ‘bout that bud 😬) But, in return, these boys have given me so much more: - They unveil my flaws, from which I can learn and improve. - They teach me unconditional love. - They show me how to be positive and have hope. - They show me what it’s like to have pure joy. It’s kinda tough to find those things in the world when the news is so full of negativity, you know? Maybe, just maybe, I subconsciously wanted to have children in a selfish way to stay motivated through the hard times. I can’t tell you how many times my boys have driven me through the wall in frustration or annoyed me through wits end. However, for every one of those moments there has been an equal and more powerful moment when they say “I love you dad”, make me laugh when I’m sad, or create lasting memories with their messy faces at the dinner table. At the end of the day, I’m proud to call myself their #dad. Maybe, this joy they bring is what #fatherhood is all about. 🤔 Anyways, thanks boys for all you’ve done for me. Today’s the day… another year past and another heart appointment checkup for Eli 😬😳 Melanie and I tend to forget about Eli’s heart condition most of the time since he’s such an active kid. But, each year, we get brought back to the “tough ol days” and are reminded what we went through. With the added worry that things could go south… However, today was a GREAT day! His doctor said that his heart is now almost normal and has IMPROVED since last year!! 🙏🏻🙌🏻 I can’t tell you how nice it is to hear that and feel a breath of fresh air. Have you ever started a #diy project out of excitement (or necessity in my case) and then started to feel a bit overwhelmed once you’re halfway through? Me neither 😉 To add some context, I was on a guys trip when the fateful phone call from Melanie happened… “Hey hun, there’s water leaking in our bathroom and water is coming up through the floor…” 😳 My stomach fell to the floor… Once I got home, I started to take a part the floor and realized it was a bigger issue than planned… and 1 demo’d #bathroom later I’m in the thick of it. Thankfully, I have an awesome #dad (who’s an architect) and YouTube that have been extremely helpful throughout the whole process. I’ve even surprised myself with what I can do. It’s all just a big puzzle that’s fun to work on in the end. So if I can do it, you can do tough projects too! How can you not take a goofy family photo on a road trip… am I right!? 😂 We are on our way to my sister’s wedding in California and to go to @legolandcalifornia 🤘🏻 We stopped for gas and saw a giant chair. So, what’s the first thing you do when you see a giant chair? You take a family photo. And then wait to see what unfolds. Pure glory. Truth be told, we’ve only been asked “Are we there yet” 3x in the first hour. Which is pretty low vs the average of you ask me. So you could say the trip is going well. 😂 Oh wait, Eli just asked 2 more times.
