To determine the effectiveness of CBD in treating methamphetamine addiction, the researchers administered CBD to rats and observed if the motivation to self-administer was decreased during treatment and if relapse was probable. The rats were then split into two groups: the first group of rats were systematically given CBD based on how often they were seeking out the methamphetamine; the second group of rats were treated with CBD only and their behavior was monitored. The researchers determined that CBD can reduce the motivation to seek out methamphetamine during addiction and post-addiction. The researchers also concluded that their study was the first demonstration “that cannabidiol can reduce the motivation to seek and consume methamphetamine, and suggests that cannabidiol might be worth trialing as a novel pharmacotherapy for methamphetamine dependence.

Previous studies have suggested that CBD improves the quality of life and decreases the frequency of seizures in children with epileptic encephalopathies. Epileptic encephalopathies are a group of epilepsies that develop in children that can cause frequent and difficult to control seizures. Canadian researchers, from 8 organizations ranging from academia to health clinics, conducted a systematic review to determine the reliability of CBD to treat those that suffer from Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD). AUD is a pattern of alcohol use that involves problems controlling drinking, a preoccupation with alcohol, continued use of alcohol even when it causes problems, having to drink more to get the same effect or having withdrawal symptoms when decreasing intake rapidly or abstaining from drinking. In the rodent and cell culture studies, CBD was found to exert a neuroprotective effect against adverse alcohol consequences on the hippocampus, an area of the brain believed to be the center of emotion, memory and the autonomic nervous system. Based on the collective findings from these studies, CBD is a promising pharmacotherapy, medical treatment by means of drugs, for Alcohol Use Disorder or AUD.

Researchers Gallily, Yekhtin, and Hanuš from The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, in Jerusalem, Israel, conducted a study to determine if terpenoids have the same anti-inflammatory properties as CBD or cannabidiol. At the commencement of the study, essential oils containing terpenoids were prepared from the non-psychoactive hemp plant; these oils were then tested for terponoid content and were given in vitro and in vivo to determine their respective anti-inflammatory properties. The three terpenoid rich oils that were studied in vivo showed anti-inflammatory activities, but did not change the tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) serum levels. CBD exerts prolonged immunosuppression and can be used to treat chronic inflammation while terpenoids can be helpful in treating acute inflammation.
