Chivalry is something that comes from the medieval knightly system; the code of chivalry emphasized bravery, military skill, generosity in victory, piety, and courtesy to women. Let's think about the original definition of chivalry, mix in a boundless medley of dating apps, toss in contemporary feminism -- and we've got ourselves a hell of a game called "let's split the bill". It's true, there are far too many women swiping right for the sake of a free vodka tonic, and that's a major bummer, becasue there are a lot of us that say yes to dates because we're actually interested. I think we all know the likeliness of finding love on a dating app is about as hopeful as winning the lottery, but a question that has crossed my mind recently is the effect of feminism on chivalry and courting.
I only admit this becasue that's where we spent a good amount of time in Boston - inside Irish Pubs. Anyway, I'm giving you the inside scoop on our unofficial Irish Pub tour of Boston. While we're obsessed with our accommodations at the Revere Hotel Boston Common, the pub left much to be desired. While most people would try to slip into a Starbucks, we walked by the The Sevens Ale House and opted for a beer and a bathroom in the same stay.
In this particular situation, I was lugging a few pairs of shoes home from my office, cold from the outside but sweating from the crowded subway, and the talking points came flooding in. New York brings out the worst and the best of everybody I've ever met in this town - here are some trigger points that bring out the worst in me: 1. Do you truly feel like a New Yorker if you’re not lugging something super inconvenient and abnormally out of place to or from work at least a couple days a week? Missing a delivery and figuring out which post office to retrieve it from, on a date/time when they’re open only to lug it home from the post office anyway isn’t really an option.
I have no true Valentine (unless you count my cat), so I've thought about the almost valentines - the romantic trials and tribulations I’ve experienced over the past year. To walk you through the past year: Last February I had a wild crush on a guy for months and shortly after Valentine’s Day he finally gave me a chance. It took me a couple of months, a fling with a much younger Australian tourist, a few horrifying dates (one with a Parisian guy who took so much offense to my choice to use Instagram as a creative outlet that he screamed at me in the middle of Bedford Avenue and another guy who got so wasted he started screaming Asian slurs out the window at a sushi restaurant), and a trip to Europe to allow myself to understand that I was not the problem in the previous situation. Over the past couple months, I've had a confession of love from somebody a couple weeks in, pleads to go home with somebody a couple hours in.
