âď¸Happy #MugshotMonday everybody! Today weâre featuring a beautiful cup by Kristen Kieffer (@kiefferceramics), who makes joyful pottery in her studio in central Massachusetts. Kristenâs mugs, cups, bowls, vases, and other functional works begin on the potterâs wheel, and then she uses a variety of decorating techniques to give each a bit of individual flair. This cup, decorated with vibrant greens, reds, and yellows, helps get us in the mood for spring, which feels like itâs just around the corner in Syracuse! To see more of Kristenâs work, visit her Instagram account, @kiefferceramics, or her website at www.kiefferceramics.com. đJoin the next Zoom Book Club on April 5th! The Everson Museum of Art and the Community Library of DeWitt & Jamesville (@cldandj) are partnering to bring you an art-themed book club right at home, in the car, on the trail, or camping in a tent in the woods. Wherever you are right now, you can enjoy a fascinating book and join the discussion on Zoom from your computer, tablet, or phone! Presented by the docents of the Everson, this social book club is open to adults and seniors looking to have a relaxing chat about a thrilling topic from the world of art. . This session we are reading American Mirror: by Deborah Solomon for the April session. As the star illustrator of The Saturday Evening Post for nearly half a century, Norman Rockwell mingled fact and fiction in paintings that reflected the we-the-people, communicating ideals of American democracy. âWhatâs interesting is how Rockwellâs personal desire for inclusion and normalcy spoke to the national desire for inclusion and normalcy,â writes Solomon. âHis work mirrors his own temperament- his sense of humor, his fear of depths- and struck Americans as a truer version of themselves than the sallow, solemn, hard-bitten Puritans they knew from eighteenth-century portraits.â Visit everson.org/classes-list to register now. #AtTheE #eversonmuseum #cnylife #centralnewyork #downtownsyracuse #syracuseny

FL 1942, which tells the story of Civil Rights leader Harry T. Moore. Boydâs current exhibition, Dawn Williams Boyd: Woe (on view through April 10), explores historical and contemporary instances of social injustice. During her talk, Boyd will give context to how she uses her artwork as a tool for educating viewers on the history of racial violence and abuse of power. Through her cloth paintings, Boyd hopes to raise awareness, preserve a legacy, and prevent history from repeating. Following her talk, Boyd will be joined by Harry T. Mooreâs grandson, Drapher âSkipâ Pagan, and author Ben Green, who wrote Before His Time: The Untold Story of Harry T. Moore, Americaâs First Civil Rights Martyr. đĽThe Everson presents a monthly series that takes viewers into the lives of diverse artists from across the globe. Curated by Syracuse University (@syracuseu) film instructor, writer, editor, and curator, Nancy Keefe Rhodes, the Everson Behind the Artist Film series features award-winning documentaries, short films, and biopics. Each screening will include opportunities for discussion and intersection among audience members. The next screening is April 7th and will be a DOUBLE FEATURE of Wild Style (1982), 82 minutes, Directed by Charlie Ahern and Siqueiros: Walls of Passion (2020), 57 minutes, Directed by Lorena MarrĂquez. . Universally hailed as the first hip-hop movie, Wild Style captures New Yorkâs 1981 hip-hop culture and several prominent figures, including Busy Bee Starski, Fab Five Freddy, The Cold Crush Brothers, and one of the godfathers of hip-hop, Grandmaster Flash. Mexican painter David Alfaro Siqueirosâs (1896-1974) mural AmĂŠrica Tropical (1932) was whitewashed almost immediately but restored in the 1960s and helped to inspire the Chicano muralist movement in Los Angeles of that era. Siqueiros was among a group of Mexican muralists who worked in the US during the Great Depression, in many ways inspiring that eraâs murals as an expression of the ideals of âpublic art.â #AtTheE #eversonmuseum #syracuseny #cnylife #downtownsyracuse #centralnewyork
đArtist Dawn Williams Boyd (@dawnwilliamsboyd) has curated a list of book recommendations that have inspired many of the pieces in her current exhibition Dawn Williams Boyd: Woe and now she wants to share them with you! . Much of Boydâs work explores historical and contemporary instances of social injustice. For Boyd, artworks are tools for educating viewers on the history of racial violence and abuse of power. Through her cloth paintings, Boyd is working to raise awareness, preserve a legacy, and prevent history from repeating. . To learn more about the stories referenced in her artworks, and to join Boydâs efforts to support history education, the Syracuse University Library (@syracuseulib) and branches of the Onondaga County Public Libraries (@ocpl_cny) will each display eight books that informed Boydâs research. Each book will be available for loan through the end of April at the Syracuse University Library and Onondaga County Public Libraries.
