Picking up right after A Discovery of Witches, back in Elizabethan London, Matthew and Diana find themselves wrapped up in Matthew’s past with new rivals trying to distract them, from each other and from the reason they’re hiding in the past to begin with. Again, picking up right after Shadow of the Night, Diana and Matthew find themselves back in present day, but it’s not how they left it. While I’m glad there was a fourth book that allowed us to see further into Diana and Matthew’s lives, I was disappointed that it didn’t have the pull that the other three books had.

We got home from our HK/Tokyo trip last night and jet lag is seriously kicking my butt. But on the upside, we got home just in time for one of ShopBop’s major sales of the year. I truly can’t remember where I first read a snippet about this book, but when I finally got around to reading it, I couldn’t put it down. The unnecessary detail made it less fast-paced and gripping than it could have been if it had been driven forward with conversation that moved the story forward instead of leaving it hanging. I knew of the ties between the last Tsar and Tsarina, as well as the British and German monarchies, but I didn’t realize that the Tsar’s mother was sister’s with the British Queen Regent as well. The Empress’ epic life from a small life in Denmark to an immeasurable life at the epicenter of Russia.
