When I was in Iceland last month, we had all sorts of different weather and that meant I had pack prepared for everything! This is everything that I packed! Let’s discuss the breakdown of carbon buzzwords with sustainability so we can understand it and cut through all the greenwashing brands love to do. •Plastic Neutral- The words “plastic-neutral” and “plastic-free” do not mean the same things. Plastic-free alludes to the fact that a product or brand has no plastic in its packaging. If a brand is plastic neutral it means the amount of plastic used, the brand will pay the equivalent to be recovered or removed from the environment. •Carbon Neutral/Net-Zero- What it means is that the brand has calculated its carbon footprint and is either working to offset or reduce the amount of carbon that it produces •Carbon Negative-This means the brand has removed more carbon than it has produced. This can also sometimes be called climate-positive. •Low Emissions-The company generates a lower amount of greenhouse emissions than business as usual. •Zero Emissions- Differing from net zero is zero emissions. This means the brand’s process creates zero emissions or no carbon dioxide emissions. However, as of right now, no technology exists with zero emissions so if a brand is claiming this, stay away. •Plant Derived- While the name is simple to understand, the net of ingredients and products that it includes is blurred. Plant-derived means that the original ingredient started out as a plant. The issue is that it doesn’t cover the amount of processing that it could have taken to get it to the ingredient as it is used in the product today. #sustainability #greenwashing #carbonfootprint #buzzwords
