The 2020 DeMarini Gattaca is a one-of-a-kind multi-piece bat with an alloy barrel and composite handle that attempts to maximize distance on well-struck baseballs via grooves on the interior of the barrel. It also offers another interesting new feature, DeMarini’s new Adjustable on Demand (AOD) knob that can change the length of the bat pitch to pitch. As I said before, I was swinging the 34”, which is clearly designed for power hitters with a stiffer handle and long barrel that just plows through baseballs. I wasn’t able to swing the 33” model, but considering the similarities between the 34” and Voodoo Insane, I imagine it is going to feel very similar to the Voodoo Balanced.
The S318 itself is an end loaded model featuring a medium barrel with a cupped end, a short transition to the handle, and a slight handle taper. The ocean is Yelich’s primary inspiration here, the barrel fading from a deep blue to a dark flamed handle emulating beach wood. The beach theme is completed by a lifeguard tower knob medallion inspired by Yelich’s favorite Zuma Beach in Malibu, near his hometown of Thousand Oaks, California and a wave pattern on the LS logo. These include a cupped ending designed to curb breakage, Louisville Slugger’s EXOPRO finish, which gives it a mirror like sheen and also enhances durability, and seamless decals, along with an MLB ink dot and a knob medallion detailing the exact specs of the bat.
The Meta’s medium sized handle has a slight flare into a traditional knob. Slugger’s new EKO composite was silky smooth and allowed them to create an absolute monster of a barrel. The bat was stiffer than I anticipated, especially considering it’s a multi-piece composite. If you have the budget and are looking for one of the highest-performing composite bats out there, you cannot go wrong with Slugger’s Meta Prime.
