In the heart of town are charming little Victorian cottages sprinkled throughout, including this one from my most recent stay: the Blue Door Inn. After a day of exploring, you simply can’t wait to return to the inn—whether it’s to retreat to your beautifully appointed room or to relax in the gazebo and surrounding gardens. And the best part: after enjoying a restful night’s sleep (in the most luxurious bed, I might add) is waking up to an incredible breakfast basket delivered right to your door. If I had to choose a place I’d return to in Mendocino, it’d surely be this one.
Cross the Golden Gate Bridge or hop on the ferry from SF to enjoy some real California goodness at Farmshop Marin. Then add on its gorgeously designed spaces, including a light and mural-filled dining room, outdoor patio, massive open kitchen, wood-fired hearth and pizza oven, plus a handsome bar and cocktail area. Though the dishes may change with the season, expect favorites like the avocado hummus to stay on the menu. Did I mention they host Fried Chicken Mondays, too? is open for lunch, dinner, brunch and midday bites.
The campsite is situated on a forested bluff overlooking the stunning Pacific Ocean and surrounded by vast natural beauty. The property features 60 safari-style tents (classic and family-size) outfitted with all the modern comforts and amenities: heated beds, down comforters, wool blankets, crisp cotton sheets, warm water bottles and lanterns. Meadow Commons is the communal area in the center with a large deck, tables, chairs, hammocks, string lights and a group campfire. The complimentary breakfast bar in the meadow serves coffee, tea, hot cocoa and light breakfast each morning.
Traveling the globe has been (and will continue to be) a big part of my heart, but the place I'll always love first and foremost is this beautiful city I've always called home, San Francisco. Now that I'm no longer rushing to catch my next flight, I've been taking the time to wander around the city more and discovering many great things within each neighborhood. Many of these places I've frequented; others I've had on my list for some time to visit; the rest are random surprises I've stumbled upon along the way. I'm especially loving how welcoming folks are to allow me into their spaces with my camera, and getting the opportunity to know more about them and what they do in return.
