I am loud, tattooed, run everywhere, lift things, ride water, surf concrete, oh, & I am running across the USA in 2018 to prevent & treat child abuse.
It was like Gary Cantrell, (known to most as “Laz”) of Barkley race direction fame, came to Portugal to specifically beat up on me. What I didn’t know, because I couldn’t read the website, was how incredibly technical the trail would be, how steep the climbs would be, and how unforgiving the race direction would be, but I loved every second of it …after it was over. It was like Gary Cantrell, (known to most as “Laz”) of Barkley race direction fame, came to Portugal to specifically beat up on me. 10-15K in between aid didn’t seem like too much on paper, but during the event, with so much climbing and so much technical trail, there was a lot of time chewed up in between and I ran dry many times, falling way behind in hydration early and keeping that same theme throughout.
Something to beat me, and beat me down and humble my cocky ass like World’s Toughest Mudder did in 2015 as the medical staff pulled me from the course at 40 miles, hypothermic, dehydrated, and babbling like an idiot with IVs stuck in my arm. I completed that 50-mile goal this year, with over 6 hours left, and now I want 75 in 2017. I will start the day with Special Operations Selection PT test standards of 2:00 max push-ups (goal: 100), 2:00 max situps (goal:110), pullups to failure (goal: 30), and a run (1.5 mile: 9:00, 5-mile: 31:00) Slow runs, fast runs, long runs, and shorties. You can complete anything you want, become anything you want, and achieve anything you want.
It’s especially vocal when people know me well Somehow, someway, but I know that’s why I’m still alive. If my brothers are relegated to a lifestyle of routine that’s killing them, I want to offer a different way. It’s 3:00 a.m., and I’m deep into the 24-hour World’s Toughest Mudder, and I’m not one bit lonely.
People looking down at my Luna Sandals, some shaking their heads, some smirking to their friends, and of course, some outright asking me if I am actually running a race in sandals. We ran through the famous Georgetown neighborhood and beautiful Rock Creek Park, then down some other long park called something-Mall, but it’s not a mall, it’s a park. It feels weird ‘cuz you’ve been running through a park of wall-to-wall people all screaming like crazy, waving signs, makes noises, …and now nothing. It kind of feels like Arlington Cemetery, one death after another, but it’s different when it’s pictures.
