A few doors down, Liam Racine opened the John St Shop (109 John Street North) in March 2020. Across the road, Jade & Laney Boutique (108 John Street North) is an airy, sun-filled shop where you’ll find trendy women’s and men’s clothing, beauty products and grooming supplies, and home décor items. There are lots of other dining options downtown, including crepes, pasta and more at Krave Bistro (24 Elgin Street West), and hipster takes on bar classics like nachos and burgers at the Lumbertown Ale House (123 John Street North). For convenience, stash your car downtown and extend your walk by picking up a trail that starts behind the Arnprior Public Library (21 Madawaska Street) and winds along the Madawaska River to Robert Simpson Park (400 John Street).
Also this week, the TD Ottawa Jazz Festival announced a virtual benefit concert and live auction that you can enjoy at home on Friday, April 23. The festival features 30 movies from six countries, including The Special, about a young man with Down Syndrome (Venezuela); Mengedegna, a documentary about an Eritrean-Ethiopian who migrated alone to Winnipeg at age 12, and the mental health consequences of that journey (Canada); “A” for Alpha, a drama about a couple struggling with gender roles and secrets in what looks to outsiders like a perfect relationship (United States); and Dope Is Death, which delves into an acupuncture detoxification program that the Black Panthers and the Young Lords launched in 1973 that was deemed too radical to continue (Canada). The Shenkman Arts Centre’s Encore Ottawa series continues this week with two performances streaming live on RogersTV Channel 22 and online on Friday, March 26: vocalist Crystalena, whose influences include Nancy Wilson, Etta James and Sade (see clip above) and the Harea Band , a group of young creatives whose innovative-yet-catchy work blends pop, funk and See photos of female farmers at the Canada Agriculture and Food Museum Get a glimpse into the world of female farmers at The Soul of the Rurality in Latin America and the Caribbean, a new exhibition at the Canada Agriculture and Food Museum in Ottawa (running until May 31, 2021).
There’s lots to check out online this week, whether you’d like to hear a nature talk, shop for local products, dream about cycling trips to come, stream a foreign film, book a campsite or take a cooking class. And until the end of March, you can nominate your favourite local businesses for inclusion in a big local guide being created by Ottawa Tourism. Ottawa Tourism includes a number of local Zoom cooking classes in this post about online social events. As I mentioned last week, I’m deep in the throes of putting the finishing touches on my new local guidebook, which will offer scores of ideas for day trips in and around Ottawa.
In this week’s road trip roundup, you’ll find tips on outdoor patios, year-round ziplining and urban walks. The International Film Festival of Ottawa is running until March 21 and gives you the chance to see all sorts of movies that probably won’t be coming to your local multiplex anytime soon. La Paysannerie, a farm in Bristol, Quebec, is giving you the chance to bring home a taste of the Pontiac region of the Outaouais with its sugar-shack meal boxes. Some of the tours focus on a theme, such as food or music, through the lens of three different destinations; others are live tours with a guide through a specific city, such as Budapest, Rio de Janeiro, Barcelona or Quebec City.

I thought that this photo I took a few years ago at @greengeckoshop in Lyndhurst, Ontario, was particularly apropos for the times we find ourselves in. Words to live by! And when we can all travel again, do drop by The Green Gecko. Terri finds beautiful gift items from all over the world. . . . . #wisewords #lyndhurstontario #family #familylove #giftshop #giftshops

Happy New Year! I started mine off with a #FirstDayHike—meant to encourage people to develop the habit of getting out into nature, right from the first day of the year. My outing wasn’t terribly ambitious: I did a 3.5km walk along flat, well-marked Trail 44 in Pine Grove Forest in the Greenbelt. But a hike doesn’t have to be hard! This one was a lovely, peaceful way to start 2020. I even spotted a woodpecker, some chickadees and several nuthatches. You still have time to follow in my January 1 footsteps. It’s a nice, mild day out there, and the snow on the trees is lovely. And if you don’t want to hike, you can also cross-country ski on that trail. If you go, have fun! (P.S. As of 10:30 this morning, the P18 parking lot hadn’t been plowed, so you’ll probably need an AWD vehicle.) . . . . . #firstdayhikes #firstdayhikes2020 #myottawa #myottawaphoto #nccgreenbelt #winterhiking #winterhike #winterhikes
A Japanese moment of Zen: a wild baby snow monkey swimming in a hot spring. Jigokudani Yaen-Koen snow monkey park is about 240km from Tokyo. The monkeys will run right by your feet; one member of our group almost lost her cell phone to a curious baby monkey! Definitely a highlight of this trip. . . . . . #hosted #satwtohoku #visitjapanus @visitjapan.us @jigokudaniyaenkoen #snowmonkey #snowmonkeys #snowmonkeypark #japan #monkey #monkeys #macaque #macaques #japanesemonkey #japanesemonkeys
