Sometimes when I’m working on a task, I tend to just dive right in because, my brain is like “oh just do this, then that...” But that’s not always the approach you should take especially in software engineering. I find my best solutions come from tasks where I had planned my approach & structured it on paper. So many times will I be in development then suddenly, I realize I forgot about a case, or see my approach was wrong. SELECTION SORT ✨ Took a different approach with this algorithm but, selection sort is another non-recursive sorting algorithm that searches for the the next ordered value and stores it into a sorted array. ✨ An easy example to help you remember this algorithm is to think about those baby toy stackable rings. The idea is to take the longest (or smallest) ring and put it on the pole. Then you search for the next biggest (or smallest) and stack it on the pole. With social distancing, we are going to see the need for having more virtual experiences, specifically with different realities. Lots of businesses are already implementing these technologies. I’m here trying to make the best of the current situation. Being quarantined over a month has gotten to me (obviously I fell in the bang cutting trap I lured myself into). But It’s been rough honestly. Some days I feel the pressure that I’m not doing enough. Others feel like I’m doing too much. It’s hard to find contentment these days but, I’m trying to be optimistic. I’m exercising my energy into things that I need for a given moment. Sometimes it’s painting & drawing to release my creativity, others it’s a game of soccer or football with my husband, and even times it’s watching tv on the couch in my pajamas. I never know what the next day will be but, that’s okay. INSERTION SORT ✨ This sorting algorithm is generally more favored from non-recursive algorithms like Bubble and Selection Sort. The best way to remember how this algorithm works is by picturing a hand of cards. One thing I wish I had growing up was a head start on coding. In fact, the first time I wrote a program, it was my first homework in my first college level Computer Science course. BINARY SEARCH ALGORITHM ✨ The earliest known implementation of this algorithm actually dates back to about 200 B.C. with an Inakibit-Anu tablet from Babylon. The tablet had about 500 Sexagesimal numbers and their reciprocals were sorted in Lexicographical order, (this made searching for a entries MUCH easier). ✨ One way of remembering this algorithm is that I tell myself it’s the “phone book” algorithm. Imagine you’re looking up someone in the phone book and, you need to find the Last Names starting with the letter J. You open the book to M and see you’ve gone too far. So then you flip the pages to right, to H. But you went too far again. BREADTH & DEPTH FIRST SEARCH ✨ If you haven’t noticed already, I’m doing a “quarantine series” of content feat. My DIY whiteboard project from the other weekend. If you want to find a previous #whiteboardnotes topic that I’ve already done, you can check the #TheHippieHackersNotes hashtag! ✨ (Back to today’s content) Breadth & Depth First Search are algorithms for traversing graphs and trees. ✨ The main takeaway from Breadth First Search (BFS) is that it “explores” all of the neighbor nodes of the current node before moving on to the next min node. This algorithm is supported by a queue data structure, seeing that the first in will be the first out (FIFO) ✨ Depth First Search (DFS) has more of a “plunging” search than BFS, making it a recursive algorithm. Depending on the what traversal pattern you’re using (pre, in, or post order) will be the return result of the tree. Also as I’m writing this post I’m realizing that I forgot to include on the whiteboard that DFS is implemented with a Stack data structure. This supports the idea of first in last out (FILO). You “plunge”, then “explore” the most recent item, (ie the top of the stack). ✨ If there is a specific topic you’d like to see, leave a comment. DIJKSTRA’S ALGORITHM ✨ Also known as the shortest path algorithm, Dijkstra’s algorithm is one one the more popular algorithms to be asked by the tech giants in technical interviews. The algorithm is used in graph theory to find the shortest distance between nodes in a weighted graph. It is still used today when using looking for the shortest paths on geographical maps, IP routing, telephone networks, and much more! ✨ The algorithm was created in 1956 by computer scientist Edsger W. Dijkstra. He was in Amsterdam shopping with his fiancée when he was thinking about the shortest way to travel from Rotterdam to Groningen. They stopped to get a meal at a coffee shop, when he wrote down the algorithm in a solid 20 minutes! He later published the algorithm in ‘59. ✨ Try seeing if you understand the example I provided on the board. BINARY SEARCH TREE ✨ These data structures are what make up Google Maps (traversal paths from one destination to the next), Git (the main abstraction is trees), Databases (Tree’s provide optimal searching, sorting, & indexing), and much more. Once you understand the complexities of this data structure, you can see how it is often used for making software that needs to be scalable. ✨ In the college, I wasn’t fond of creating a BST to solve the N-Queens problem. It was the only project I truly detested for my data-structures course. Sorry I haven’t been posting more tech related/ any posts. As of lately, I’ve been doing some self reflection, figuring out how to spend my days in this “new normal” and, cutting my bangs for the world’s existential crisis. Tren’s coworker tested positive for the virus so, while he’s still required to show up to work (🙃) I’ve also been on an extreme quarantine (and going crazy at that haha). ✨ Mainly I want to take this second to emphasize to everybody how important it is to stay home during these times.
