Well DC, it’s been a heck of a run 🥹 Wow we move to Chicago tomorrow, and it’s really hitting us just how pivotal this area has been for both of us as individuals and as a couple. We both moved here fresh out of college (Cass from PA me from CA) and began building our adult lives here. We both have been here about 11 years but didn’t meet until about 5 years into living here. My early years in DC were spent building my career and going out a lot 😂 I thought I was straight but felt SO different in ways I couldn’t understand so I really gave the DC straight dating scene my all. Then through a few years of turmoil I finally put the pieces together and realized I was gay. DC will always be the place that held me through this deep personal realization, and the city that collided me with my beloved Cass 🥰 Cass moved here with her ex girlfriend and over the years as that relationship came to an end she decided to leave DC for grad school in Seattle. BUT on her last weekend in town she matched with me on Bumble and the rest is history. She left DC for a year, got her dream degree, and then headed back to build a life with me here. We moved in together, got engaged, adopted a crap ton of cats, got married, and learned how to home here. We experienced our greatest triumphs and our greatest struggles here, and we truly feel like this area raised us as adults. Let’s be honest the suburbs can be pretty straight 🫠🏳️‍🌈 When Cass and I moved into our first home 4 years ago we moved from the city to the suburbs and quickly realized we had some learning to do. We were the only gay couple in the neighborhood and it was clear that our house ran differently from our neighbors. We found that because we couldn’t rely on any gendered division of duties we had to learn it all. Both being raised and socialized as women we had a lot of experience in things like how to run a home run effectively but we had some gaps when it came to things like construction and home maintenance. Our first home will always be the place where we learned how to home. We watched countless instructional videos, experienced major issues as well as triumphs, and truly found our design style. We also learned how to navigate being a gay couple in a primarily straight space. How we improved the indoor air quality in our home ✨ [ad] With Cass’ asthma and our allergies we can really feel the results when our air is polluted. This can happen from inhaling dust particles, burning candles, pollen from outdoors, our pets’ hair and dander, etc. While we can’t eliminate these we can reduce the effects they have on our air quality by using high quality air purifiers and properly maintaining our HVAC vents and ducts. When we are diligent with these measures we breathe easier, sneeze less, and certainly have a greater peace of mind. ADHD girlies don’t gatekeep 👇🏻 Y’all wanted to know the tools I use to help manage my ADHD so here you go! A few quick notes: ✨ ADHD presents differently for everyone so some tools that work well for me might not work for you, but it doesn’t make them invalid for others ✨ you’ll notice medication does not appear on my list because I’ve chosen not to go that route for treatment. I’m very pro-medication but that should always be explored with a qualified provider ✨let’s make this list a resource for others so drop the things that have worked for you in the comments below! All of these have been either tools that I use or changes I’ve made since getting diagnosed. They are not things I use everyday (although sometimes that is the case) they are more like a toolbox. I don’t know how to explain it but things just feel different 👀 Cass and I lived together before getting married so we didn’t imagine much of anything would change after our wedding. And on a practical level nothing did. However there is something mentally and emotionally that shifts when you stand up in front of all your important people and declare your love and devotion to each other for the rest of your lives. Doing this with a partner who I know 100% helps me be the best version of myself just completely gave me a sense of deep calm and peace. Let’s chat ADHD brains 🧠 Turns out all those things I was struggling with that I thought everyone else was also struggling with too ended up not being a struggle for everyone else 😑🙃 I got diagnosed three years ago at 29 and have spent a considerable amount of time since then learning more about this beautiful brain of mine and how it likes to actually work and approach the world. I love how my brain works but that doesn’t mean some aspects of it aren’t a struggle or aren’t frustrating. Because they definitely are. How we changed the tone of our relationship ✨🫶🏼🏳️‍🌈 My wife and I are both fiery ambitious people which is one of our biggest draws to each other but can also translate into disagreements and annoyances more easily. When we first moved in together we found ourselves getting into conflict mainly over small things that built up over time. When one of us finally would communicate the annoyance it wasn’t delivered or received in a way that was particularly productive. Because my wife has ADHD and loves making systems. She came up with the design for a family meeting template that would work for our needs. We tweaked it over time and use it as a weekly ritual that has honestly become quite fun! We keep things lighthearted, but both respect that this is a time and place we designed to be able to hear and receive feedback in productive ways. Neither of us walk away feeling unheard or unseen. It also gives us a designated space to voice those things so they aren’t randomly blurted out throughout the week in times of stress.
