I realized I hardly posted any pics from the 4 months I spent in Wales. So here they come. . This one was taken in Tenby, probably the most popular and cutest tourist town in Wales. It's been a summer tourist destination since Victorian times and it feels like you're in southern Europe there (except the weather isn't as nice). Colorful buildings, quaint little roads, castle ruins, stunning beaches and lots of flowers make this a perfect town to wander around. . The grey house pictured here is a merchant's house from the 15th century. You can go inside but it was closed every time I was in Tenby. It's open only Saturdays and Thursdays from 11am-4pm. . . . . #tenby #tenbywales #merchanthouse #walestravel #kings_villages #bestcityshots #uktravel #historygirls #historic #visitwales #welshtourism #travelwales #tenbytown #oldtowns #pembrokeshire

Not the best quality picture, but when I arrived in Iceland I didn't think I would get a pic like this at all, so it's one of my favorites. . The Northern Lights were the main reason I wanted to go to Iceland in the winter. I even checked the weather forecast before booking flights. But of course the weather changed, with snow and rain forecasted all week. The first few nights the sky was completely cloudy. I had accepted I wouldn't be checking this off my bucket list. . It's really hard to catch the lights. Not only do you need clear skies, but you also need to hope for aurora activity. The only reason I saw them was a combination of luck and my boyfriend setting several alarms throughout the night to check for aurora alerts. . Btw, he used: π auroraforecast.is πaurora.live/camera/lan-cam-1-iceland/ . So on our fourth night, he woke me up saying there was activity. I quickly swaddled myself in every layer of clothing I could reach and jumped out of the van. . And all I saw in the sky were clouds. . The thing about the Northern Lights is that they kind of look like clouds, especially if they're not very strong. They come out a lot brighter and greener on your phone. So I had my phone pointed at the sky but none of the clouds had that greenish tint. . My boyfriend swore he saw something before waking me up. Yet there was a good 10 minutes during which I became more and more convinced he had pulled my out of the warmth of the van (at 1 am, in subzero temperatures) for clouds. I was about to get back in the van...and then the show began. . The lights appeared on and off in waves, with some brighter than others. Sometimes it's just a few minutes, sometimes it lasts hours. Apparently we missed the brightest ones (they started about half an hour after we went to sleep π), but I was just happy to see anything at all! . Have you ever seen the Northern Lights?
To go to the Blue Lagoon or not to go? π . Yeah, it's super overpriced ($70!!π±). Yeah, it's just glorified geothermal plant runoff water. Yeah, it's over marketed because the CEO is also chairman of the Iceland tourism board. Yeah, it gets really crowded. . But did I enjoy soaking in this toasty warm gorgeous blue water and relaxing with my free drink and face mask before heading to the airport for my flight? You bet I did. . If you don't have the time or budget for the Blue Lagoon though, fear not. There are plenty of other (much more reasonably priced) geothermal pools all over Iceland. This is one of four I visited during my week in Iceland, and this wasn't even my favorite π€« . . . . #icelandbluelagoon #bluelagoon #icelandtrip #icelandwinter #silicawater #icelandtips #sheisnotlost #tlpicks #passionpassport #girlsborntravel #girlslovetravel #travelingwomen #culturetrip #bns_earth #traveldreamseekers #travelbucketlist
Campsites in Iceland that are open in off-season months πβ (save if you're ever planning to travel by van outside of summer months): . π Camping Selfoss (has a big warm common room & kitchen, free hot showers) π Skaftafell Camping (free toilets and showers) π Skogar Campsite (overpriced considering it's just a parking lot with toilets, but you wake up to a beautiful waterfall--the one in this picture!) π Skjol Campsite (toilets and shower; field was muddy but we parked on the parking lot in front of the restaurant) π Mosskogar Camping (another fav: a cute little farm campsite near Reykjavik) π Campsite Grindavik (big kitchen & common area, plus free showers and toilet; close to Keflavik) . It gets dark fast in the fall/winter/spring and lots of campsites are closed then, so don't make the mistake I made in driving to a campsite in the dark only to find that it's closed for the season π And keep in mind it's illegal to park overnight anywhere other than a campsige. . Check out my itinerary to see how to end up at these campsites on your trip. Link to blog post in bio! . Do you know of any other campsites in Iceland that are open outside of summertime? Leave them in the comments!
I almost didn't go to Iceland. . The plan was to travel by van. Then I found some travel forums made out that camping in a van in November was impossible. . But I survived! It is possible! . Things to keep in mind if you're thinking of traveling by van in Iceland outside of summer months: *** π Off-seaon months are the only time you can hike a glacier! Totally worth going to Iceland in the winter just for that. . β It can snow. And it did when I was there in November. Make sure you're comfortable driving in it if you're renting a campervan and there's a snow forecast. Roads weren't plowed and quite slippery at times. . π You need to park at a campsite as wild camping is no longer allowed in Iceland. But be aware a lot of campsites are only open in the summertime. . π It's possible to sleep in a van even in subzero temperatures! Your van needs a heater though, and be prepared for brutal mornings when you have to get out of your sleeping bag. . π¬ Strong winds, and weather can (and will) change at any moment. I didn't have to use it, but I'd recommend getting all the insurance you can get for your van rental! *** For more tips on off-season van travel in Iceland, check out my latest blog post!
