With a reputation for being a party island, it’s no wonder why Ios has so many churches! I wish travel was back to normal. Today marks ONE YEAR since I’ve been on a plane. One year... It was coming back from Greece. 🇬🇷In hindsight, I should have just stayed there, but obligations (aka kids) always have me coming back. I would love nothing more than to book a one-way ticket to Europe & live somewhere on the continent, perhaps France or Spain, both countries I absolutely love. I am not all that brave. My everyday life is pretty much filled with little-to-no risk in the comfort of my own home. But I dream of being brave, of facing my fears and getting out of my comfort zone. The one thing I’ve found in life that does that is travel. Travel forces me to take risks, be brave, try something new and kicks me out of my comfort zone. 🇬🇷 In Koufonisia I faced a fear of cave swimming. I always feel safe swimming in clear water where I can see to the bottom. But, swimming through a cave, it gets a little dark and you can’t see below. My mind wandered and a bit of fear set in as i swam but, at the same time, it was exhilarating! As many fears as I have, I try to face them when I travel. 🇬🇷 What does travel do for you? Do you face any fears in your travels? 🇬🇷 (These caves are boat-access only. Our sailboat captain sailed our group over there and anchored, allowing us to jump off the boat and explore! I love waking up at sunrise 🌅 and having the whole town to myself! Truth be told, I only do this when I travel - never at home. ✈️ What is it about travel that forces you to face your fears or try something new? 😥 I am afraid of heights and jumping off a 15+-foot cliff into a small-ish hole of water (a natural pool located along the coastal cliff path) appropriately called The Devil’s Eye in Koufonisia was terrifying...at least at first. I nervously watched several other daring people jump in (and one older man doing backflips into it) before it was my turn. Then, after many false attempts, I finally jumped...and it was exhilarating! So much so I kept going back to jump in again and again. The adrenaline was definitely pumping! (And yes, I hold my nose 👃 when I jump I into water - I’m not letting water get up my nose and ruining my brave attempt at facing a fear 😂). 😈 If you make it to the Devil’s Eye, would you jump? Who else like hiking?🥾 The rugged coastline of Koufonisia actually has an easy path that runs alongside it starting near one of the beaches 🏖 and you can travel along for several miles before reaching quite a lovely restaurant 🥗🌯🍻 with outdoor seating and views of the water. You will see a couple watering holes, cliffs and caves. It was one of the most picturesque hikes I’ve ever done! Have you ever visited a place that wasn’t on your bucket list but you knew it should have been all along? That’s how I felt about Koufonisia, an island I hadn’t even heard of previous to my sailing trip around the Greek islands. The turquoise waters and rocky coastline with caves and water holes was something out of a dream. The island wasn’t all that crowded either although we were there at the start of shoulder season.
