Highlights
  • How to check boot size and fit for mountaineering shoe

This is usually quite different than your normal “town” footwear and boot size. Fully converted to vapor barriers years ago after reading Extreme Alpinism and testing out the concept with socks and jackets. If you plan to go mountaineering at altitude or spend long days walking, your feet are going to swell and they need space to adjust inside. It’s always been a balance between snug for good foot technique and having enough room to avoid pinch points and enable good circulation.

  • Australia's Ten Highest Peaks

So, with gear sorted, a packed lunch, lots of snacks and a great bunch of people along with Zac Zaharias as our guide and his team from Peak Learning, it was time to head out. Zac regaled great stories of the challenges he and his team faced in their many Himalayan expeditions; Mike Edmondson showed off his lovely photography of Kosciuszko National Park and yours truly, presented the story on the AHF and the great work it does across the Himalayas. Gearing up, we started our ascent up to Etheridge Ridge Peak (2,180m) and then onto Mt Kosciuszko (2,228m), the highest mountain in Australia. The last two were what is termed, the Abbott’s – Abbott Peak (2,159m) and Abbott Peak East (2,145m).

  • Australia: Alpine Skills Course

Having hiked up Australia’s tallest peak, Mt Kosciuszko in summer, the alpine winter conditions encountered were naturally, very different. Whiteout conditions on our last day you can find this Essential Alpine Skills Course, along with others that Andrew provides, on his website. Skills learnt on the course ranged from clothing and equipment selection, emergency shelters, snow craft, route selection, navigation, weather assessment, group management, hypothermia prevention and leave no trace skills and ethics. Summit 8000’ for more inspirational stories of Andrew’s 14 x 8,000er summits https://www.andrewlockadventures.com/.You can also read about the snow climbing course we had previously done at Mt Kosciuszko here.

  • Which mountaineering book to read next?

simply mountaineers that they came across or mentioned in their bookpersonal stories based on the same event e.g. all the books about the 1996 Everest disaster Popular books that people gravitate towards are those highlighted in green on the mind map i.e. High Adventure or View From The Summit – 14 x 8000ers – mountaineers who have completed the ‘grand slam’ of mountaineering – climbing all the highest peaks in the world over 8000m e.g. Everest – Reinhold Messner – first to climb all 14 x 8000ersNo Shortcuts to the Top – Ed Viesturs – there are not nearly as many female mountaineers, so it’s fascinating to read about experiences from a female perspective e.g. Cathy O’Dowd – while we’d rather read about great mountaineering experiences rather than disasters, this topic probably has the most books written about it, and it’s interesting to read the story from so many different perspectives e.g. For more books, see our list of Books to read for Armchair Mountaineers.
